HARRISON TOWNSHIP - It was difficult to tell who cheered the loudest during award ceremonies after Friday’s Division 1 cross country regional at Lake St. Clair Metropark.

The Birmingham Seaholm contingent was loud and proud, pushing the noise meter to its limit. But so was the group from Troy, whose loud and lengthy cheers got the attention of the announcer, who issued a friendly “settle down” to the Colts.

That was probably the noise-factor clincher in Troy’s favor in the sweepstakes for sound. But the Maples had the most to cheer about as the girls secured another regional title, sweeping the first three places in scoring 28 points, while Troy was right behind in second with 43 as both earned state title berths. The top three teams and top 15 individuals qualify for the state meet Nov. 5 at Michigan International Speedway.

On the boys side, Brother Rice continued rolling out quality efforts as the Warriors had five finishers among the top 14 to win with 48 points. Birmingham Seaholm was second with 62 and Grosse Pointe North (130) wrapped up the final qualifying spot.

The Warriors have won the Catholic League and four other invitational titles, the last one getting them to the state meet. But improving Seaholm was nipping at their heels.

Luke Wallace placed second in 15:49 and teammates Ben Williams (third) and George Nummer (fourth) followed, giving the Maples three finishers before Rice’s top runner came in.

But Rice’s Mike Tremonti placed fifth in 16:13, and teammates Alec Miracle (seventh), Kevan O’Brien (10th), Grant Davey (12th) and Kyle Chisholm (14th) came in before the Maples’ next runner, Jakob Sayers (21st).

“Nobody expected it to be as close as it was,” said Davey. “(But) I think we did what we had to do,” said Tremonti, “(and) we had the same mindset. Confident in our abilities … and running like we have a chip on our shoulders.”

Seaholm’s three-pack of finishers toward the front was a surprise for most. “It was really great, we’ve always had a good top two runners and we were trying to get the other guys closer to put pressure (on Rice),” said Wallace, who challenged for the victory much of the race but settled for second, a few seconds behind Steve Stine of Fraser, who clocked 15:46. “The last 1 ½ miles, I was fighting the wind, trying to create separation and he (Stine) kept responding.”

The Warriors have remained consistent with quality performances in nearly every outing of a solid season. “We’re very proud to win this thing,” said Rice coach Bob Stark. “Seaholm’s a well-coached, talented team. We’re proud of what we’ve done.”

Alexander Ross of Birmingham Groves, who finished eighth in 16:19, claimed one of the state qualifying spots. Marcus Jackson of Royal Oak placed ninth in 16:21 to qualify.

For the girls, the defending D1 state champion Maples were at their best. They gushed about the scenic background of mighty Lake St. Clair, and ran like the wind.

Audrey Ladd, Rachel McCardell and Emily Rooney, the Maples’ front-running pack with Royal Oak’s Grace Cutler along for the ride, controlled the race virtually from the start. About 10-15 seconds off the pace was another pack, dominated by Troy runners as Megan Worrell, Hannah Palomino and Katie Scoles kept their tempo ahead of the rest of the field, another 15 seconds behind.

When places were to be decided, the Maples took off and settled it themselves with Ladd (18:12), McCardell (18:12.4) and Rooney (18:12.6) separated by less than a second.

“It was absolutely incredible, especially running with my teammates … so powerful,” said McCardell.

“I just wanted to come in and have a good race and run with my teammates,” said Rooney. “(An) incredible feeling.”

Ladd, the Oakland County meet champ, just cruised along as she had in the past. “We all worked together,” said the senior, who was joined by Kati Beckeman (eighth) and Lily Tripp (14th) as the Maples’ scoring five.

Cutler, who had been struggling with a mid-season illness, came in fourth in 18:17 and teammate Katherine Forsyth placed 11th in 19:02 to also qualify for state.

Worrell placed fifth in 18:42 to lead five Colts in the top 12 as Hanna Palomino (fifth), Katie Scoles (ninth), Camille Loken (11th) and Megan Monaghan (12th) came in strong.

“We wanted to come out today and work on our pack running and we did a great job,” said Troy coach Matt Richardson, who also had Emily Stabinsky (16th place) not far behind the others. “We’re happy.”

Emma Lucken of Birmingham Groves placed 17th in 20:00 as the top finisher for the Falcons and Leah Warren of Birmingham Seaholm placed 18th.
