Fenton's Dimambro wins; Fenton girls triumph by a point

DAVISBURG >> Make no mistake about it, Holly coach would have rather had his squad at the top of the heap, looking down on the rest of the competition at the final Flint Metro League jamboree Wednesday at Springfield Oaks.

As it turned out, the Bronchos settled for a solid second place in the eight-team meet. Fenton won with 30 points, Holly followed with 89 and Linden (98), Clio (100) and Swartz Creek (104) rounded out the top five teams.

Holly, who won the Division 2 class at the Nike Holly Raffin Invitational last month, has been trying to find consistency.

“It’s been a little bit of a struggle,” said Brinker, who aimed to peak the Bronchos later this season than last year. That didn’t happen as planned for various theories, according to Brinker, who couldn’t fault the effort of his squad. “They’re great kids,” he said, “(and) Michael Ponkey, my senior, ran very, very well.”

Ponkey placed fifth in 17:06, giving Holly the single-digit finisher to help secure second. Sam Schneider (14th), Jacob Alvarado (18th), Cooper Frederick (23rd) and Emilio Gomez (29th) were within 30 seconds of each other for a tight pack of supporters.

Fenton, with five top-ten finishers, was the easy winner as the Tigers, who had won the two previous jamborees, continued their league dominance.

Dominic Dimambro won in 16:16 and teammate Andrew Bond was second in 16:33. Both are returning all-staters.

Dimambro took advantage of the pleasant weather and ideal running conditions. “It was great, last time we were here, it was a mudpit,” said Dimambro, recalling the Nike Holly Raffin Invitational on a rain-soaked course. “The best feeling was to be able to run fast and see all my teammates back there.”

Clio’s Chris Franks was third in 16:55 and Swartz Creek’s Caden Pifer was fourth in 16:57.

Ortonville Brandon placed seventh with 152 points with Mike Allen placing 13th to lead the Blackhawks. “It’s his first year running cross country,” said Brandon coach Erik Donders of his senior.

On the girls side, Fenton, backed by a raucous throng of supporters, won by a point over Flushing. The Tigers, who had three top 10 finishers, scored 38 points, Flushing had 39 and Linden had 57. Fenton’s Alexa Keiser won in 18:54 and Flushing’s Jessi Lindstrom was second in 19:08. Flushing had four finishers in the top 10 and Fenton had three with Cambrian Tiemann (third) and Jenna Keiser (fifth). But the Tigers’ front three beat Flushing’s front three for the difference, even though the Raiders final two scorers beat Fenton’s final two.

Alessia Fionda placed 12th to lead Ortonville Brandon to sixth place, and Monica Ruiz of Holly placed 19th to lead the Bronchos, with teammates Lauren Hackett (25th) and Samantha Tschirhart (27th) following.
