Lake Orion’s boys are trying to make a late season push for Thursday’s cross country final OAA Red jamboree, but the Dragons will need help in order to snare their sixth straight league crown.

The championship season begins in earnest this week as league titles will be decided in the Flint Metro League, KLAA Lakes Conference, KLAA Kensington Conference, OAA White, OAA Blue, Catholic League and MIAC conferences.

The Flint Metro League starts it off Wednesday with the OAA Red, White and Blue meets Thursday, as well as the KLAA Lakes and Kensington Conference meets, and the MIAC championship is Friday and the Catholic League meet is Saturday.

Lake Orion placed second in the first OAA Red jamboree, and was third in the second jamboree. Even if the Dragons win the third jamboree, Clarkston, the winner of the first two jamborees, would have to drop to third in order for the Dragons to have a chance at a league title. Dragons Coach Stan Ford isn’t counting on that happening since the Wolves, in the driver’s seat, have been a surprise team of sorts in the league. They’ve done it with depth under new coach Larry Adams. “Our group of seven are real solid,” Adams said. “We pack run pretty well.”

Indeed, Clarkston’s front five, consisting of William Eisert, Shawn Slater, Nick Favazza, Mika Juuhl and Brendan Favazza, is separated by less than 30 seconds in any given race. Nate Sesti and Jacob Dolan aren’t far behind that group.

Birmingham Seaholm, though, will also be a factor since the Maples, who were last in the first jamboree, beat Lake Orion by a point in the second jamboree in placing second. The Maples’ Luke Wallace and Ben Williams are front runners who could challenge Matt Schram of Rochester Adams, who won the first two jamborees and has finished either first or second in most of his meets this year.

On the girls side, Troy surprised defending league champ Birmingham Seaholm in the first jamboree by two points in winning. Since then, the Maples have shifted into championship gear, winning the second jamboree as well as their sixth straight Oakland County meet crown. Audrey Ladd, Rachel McCardell and Emily Rooney took the first three places for Seaholm in the second jamboree. Clarkston, second to Seaholm in the second jamboree, hasn’t been able to pierce the Maples’ front three, but could pack its runners well enough to challenge Seaholm, while Troy could also be a factor.

In the OAA White Thursday, West Bloomfield’s boys, winners of the first two jamborees, look to clinch their first title in recent memory with challenges from Royal Oak, while on the girls side, Bloomfield Hills, winners of the second jamboree, and Stoney Creek, winners of the first jamboree, will settle the score.

In the OAA Blue Thursday, Berkley’s boys and girls are in cruise control with victories in the two previous jamborees, although the boys beat an improving Avondale squad by only two points in the last jamboree.

At Thursday’s KLAA Lakes Conference, Lakeland’s boys, with a 5-0 dual meet record in the North Division, and Milford’s boys, 5-0 in the West Division, are both contenders. But the Eagles may be without their top runner, Drew Wenger, who has a stress reaction. For the girls, Brighton, Milford and Pinckney, each with 4-1 dual meet records, engage in a winner-take-all showdown with an improving Lakeland squad with a 5-0 mark in the KLAA North, figuring to be in the mix.

At Thursday’s KLAA Kensington Conference, Novi (5-0), Northville (4-1) and Plymouth (5-0) are contenders with the Wildcats, who’ve won Oakland County and Cleverly Invite titles, a slight favorite. Northville lost to Novi by a point in a dual meet a few weeks ago and the Mustangs are always hot rivals for the Wildcats.

At the Catholic League meet Saturday, Novi Detroit Catholic Central’s string of nine straight league titles is in jeopardy with a resurgent Brother Rice squad in the field. The Warriors have won three invitationals and were third at Oakland County meet, four places and some 80 points better than the Shamrocks.
