Everest falls in regional final to GPW Liggett 1-0

MADISON HEIGHTS - It was a close one.

An early goal was the difference for Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett Knights in their 1-0 win over Clarkston Everest Collegiate Mountaineers on Thursday night. Liggett head coach David Dwaihy was happy his team was able to hang on.

“We scored pretty early, maybe five or six minutes into the game,” Coach Dwaihy said. “Sophomore Kelly Solak – a midfielder that attacks for us – did a nice set of moves at midfield and was able to sneak one by their goalie.”

The Knights had to hang on through the remaining 75 minutes as the Mountaineers worked thefield to try an even the score. But the Knights defense was impenetrable and the shots that did get through just missed their intended mark.

“Once we scored they definitely responded and it was a very even game after that,” Coach Dwaihy said. “It was fortunate for us that we got the early goal. There was a lot of battling at midfield and they had their chances. They had one shot that hit the post and went down and almost went in. We had some good chances ourselves but it was a game of near misses after that.”

Liggett will now head to Troy Athens on Tuesday, June 14th for a matchup in the state semifinal.

Their opponent will be the winner of the Lansing Christian and Manchester.
