EAST LANSING >> Repeat after me: No repeat.

As it had done so often in big games this season, Birmingham Detroit Country Day fell behind Grand Rapids South Christian early in Friday’s Class B semifinal, and could never catch up, losing 57-46.

That officially dethroned the Yellowjackets as the reigning Class B champions.

“This is our 17th final four. I can’t knock our kids — I’ll never knock our kids. We almost came back. They had a chance — we had it down to four — but it was just that breaking line we couldn’t get across,” Country Day coach Frank Orlando said.

“I’ll preach as long as I live that it’s a team. We weren’t successful today, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t who they want to be. We just didn’t perform. So God bless ‘em. They didn’t quit. It didn’t look good. I mean, it didn’t look good. They were taking us out of a lot of things, and we didn’t handle it. Credit to South Christian. They’re a good ballclub. I wish them well in the state championship.”

South Christian and Marshall will play Saturday at 6 p.m. to be crowned the next champion.

It’s probably not the expected matchup, and that’s OK with the Sailors (25-2), who were here two years ago. They were fine with being the underdogs, something that helped keep them loose at the start.

“Being the underdog, and getting this win is just such an amazing feeling, because no one knew we had it in us,” said senior all-stater Jennifer DeBoer, who was on that final four team as a sophomore, and had a game-high 18 on Friday.

“I think we knew that we didn’t really have anything to lose. I mean, yeah, we made it to the final four, and we wanted to win, but the pressure really wasn’t on us. I think that kind of calmed my nerves, and calmed the nerves of my team.”

The Yellowjackets (24-2) didn’t look calm at the beginning, shooting just 14.7 percent in the first half, with 12 turnovers. They didn’t score in the second quarter, until a Destiny Pitts steal and lay-in with 2:10 left in the first half.

“I think two things were in effect. One was, they played very good defense. I give them credit for that. We just for some, I would call it unknown reason, we were hurrying. We shot 17 percent from the field in the first half, and that wasn’t us. That wasn’t us all year,” Orlando said. “I kept telling the girls, in these kind of games, you have to be better, you have to be much better, and you have to understand that you can’t take away what you’ve done all year. We came back six, seven times against Arbor Prep. We were down 21 in the third quarter. We came back against Lathrup, we came back against the best teams in the state. But, it’s a game played by kids.

“We weren’t at our best. There’s no question. I’m not going to take anything away from Grand Rapids South Christian.”

The Yellowjackets also committed nine personal fouls in the first half.

That didn’t necessarily hurt until Pitts picked up her fourth with just 1:21 into the second half, on a ticky-tack push-off foul.

Teammate Tylar Bennett — who’d scored six points early in the third quarter, as the Yellowjackets cut the deficit to six points — picked up three fouls in the span of two minutes, and joined Pitts on the bench.

Country Day would make a fourth-quarter run, getting it the deficit down to just four points, 41-37, on a Pitts 3-pointer with 4:30 left. That would be as close as they’d get.

“It’s just hard when some of our key players are in foul trouble — like me and Tylar had to go to the bench with four fouls. ... It’s hard to come all the way back like that,” said Pitts, who was somewhat held in check by game-long harassment by South Christian senior Markayla Vander, finishing with 14 points.. “Throughout the other games, I always said, once you get down so much, (unless) that team’s going to come apart, and it’s going to be hard to come back.”

The Sailors didn’t come apart, holding their poise and making 21 of 29 free throws on the game. Country Day was 9-for-9 from the line.

“Like I told coach O, when we lost freshman year in quarterfinals, I told him just before we came in here that we were going to be back here next year,” Pitts said. “That’s how I personally feel. I told coach O that, and I’m going to promise that, too.”
