This year’s Detroit Catholic Central team featured 16 seniors on the roster. And despite playing for a different coach every year, they were able to maintain a consistently high level of play throughout their high school careers.

That senior leadership was a key asset for new coach Brandon Kaleniecki this season. In particular, senior captains Nick Macari and Brian Kearns helped ease the transition for the new coach.

“They were without a doubt my best ally in terms of coming in this year,” Kaleniecki said. “These are two guys that have been around the program. They’ve had three different coaches, and they could have made things real challenging for me. Instead, they made it absolutely phenomenal. Anything I needed done, I could tell them, and it was done. And that’s just, the reason why we’re here is because of guys like this. Like we said yesterday, we can point them in a direction, but they’re the ones driving it. And they took it. They carried it, and they’re the reason why we won three in a row.”

One thing that did provide a bit of continuity was that all of the coaches had experience with the Catholic Central program. Kaelniecki is a 2000 graduate of Catholic Central and won two state titles as a player. Previous coaches Doug Itami and Danny Veri had coached in the program prior to being named head coach.

“There were some differences, but a lot of similarities. They’re all preaching the same stuff. You’ve got to play as hard as you can. You’ve got to play for the two C’s on your chest,” Kearns said. “I think they were all different, but they were all great in their own way. And I think they all added a piece to this puzzle to go win three. So I think it was huge for us, and I think Coach Kal was the perfect coach to finish it all off.”

“It’s a good thing knowing that our coaches, they’ve been in our shoes before. So they have that experience. They know what they’re talking about,” Macari said. “So we know we can listen to them because they’re telling us the right things to do, and they’re adding that piece to the puzzle that we needed to finish the season out on top.”

But in the final analysis, it was all about the senior depth coming through, finding that last bit of energy to close out the last period of the last game of their careers on Saturday night. Even when the Shamrocks lost a couple of players due to injury, it was simply next senior up for Catholic Central.

“It was huge, especially when we had a couple guys go down tonight in that game, and at that point you kind of have to shorten the bench a little bit. And it did seem like every guy that was up was a senior. And it takes on a different animal when you’re a senior and you know you’re playing your last high school game,” Kalenicki said. “The underclassmen look up to you and they’re looking for that leadership. And when you know it’s your last game, and this one – win or lose – it was going to be their last game, you know they’re going to give you everything they’ve got. They’ve been waiting of the opportunity to be a senior and be the guys that lead the team to a state championship. They were ready.”

The Shamrock seniors will leave a lasting legacy, even for a program as storied as Detroit Catholic Central. The seniors went out in style Saturday afternoon winning their third straight Division 1 title, something no team has done in Division 1 since the Shamrocks won four straight titles from 2000-2003, the first four years that the MHSAA went to three divisions for hockey.
