Novi CC defense keeps Brighton offense silent

PLYMOUTH – On Saturday evening, the Detroit Catholic Central Shamrocks and Brighton Bulldogs hooked up in a rematch of the 2013 and 2014 Division 1 Finals. The teams had split the previous two games with Brighton winning in 2013 and Catholic Central taking home the 2014 title. And it was the Shamrocks who emerged victorious in the rubber match, knocking off the Bulldogs 3-0 to claim their third straight Division 1 title.

“There is really nothing to explain it really. I feel on top of the world right now,” Shamrocks senior captain Nick Macari said. “I’ve been on the team for three years, and we were fortunate to win all three years. It just got better and better each year. Knowing that I went out on top as a senior, there’s nothing better.”

The goaltenders served notice right away that this was not going to be a high scoring game. Catholic Central had the early advantage but Brighton goaltender Logan Neaton came up with a fantastic glove save to rob Sheldon Wasik on the power play. Immediately afterward, Brighton’s Jake Crespi was awarded a penalty shot following a shorthanded breakaway, and it was Shamrocks goaltender Alec Calvaruso’s turn to come up with the huge save, stoning Crespi with a pad save.

The Shamrocks finally broke through with 9:04 left in the second period when Glynn Robitaille pounced on a loose puck in front of the Brighton net and shoveled it over a pile of players for the game’s first goal and a 1-0 Catholic Central lead.

Goaltender Logan Neaton was outstanding for Brighton, stopping 26 shots and making a handful of spectacular saves to keep the Bulldogs hanging around.

“Logan has given us a chance to win almost every game. You’ve got to give him a lot of credit just for keeping us in the position,” Brighton head coach Paul Moggach said. “Logan gave us a chance at least to fight back.”

But Catholic Central made it 2-0 late in the second period when Macari broke in and popped a shot over the goalie’s shoulder and just underneath the crossbar. The Shamrocks then put the game out of reach early in the third period when Cody Borke crashed the net and deflected in Austin Roell’s shot to make it 3-0.

Brighton never really got going offensively in this one as the Shamrocks simply had too much depth and used an aggressive forecheck to keep the puck in the Bulldogs’ end for much of the first two periods.

As a result, the Shamrocks finished with a sizeable 29-15 edge in shot on goal and Brighton just couldn’t muster enough consistent offense to threaten a comeback.

“The biggest thing we’ve talked about - and these guys can tell you how often we’ve talked about it – is just getting pucks in behind their defense. That way, you force them on their back foot and put them under pressure,” Kaleniecki said. “If the first guy is going hard and creating a little bit of havoc, you create some turnovers. And even if you don’t necessarily create turnvoers, if you get the puck in behind, by the time they get it they’re still a long way from our net, and you’ve got a better chance of creating something off that.”

“I didn’t think we ever got totally into our game because Catholic Central didn’t allow us to,” Moggach said. “I thought they played a great game on both sides of the puck offensively and defensively, and we just really didn’t find our game. We didn’t find a way to get to them.”

Catholic Central finishes the year 24-7. In addition to winning the state title, Catholic Central also won the MIHL North.

Brighton finishes the year 22-9.
