Novi finishes in seventh place

HOLLAND – Some may not see swimming as a real team sport, but Birmingham Brother Rice embodied the team aspect of swimming in the 2015-16 season.

After losing a key group of seniors from last year’s Division 1 state championship team, the Warriors had to regroup with a younger and inexperience squad this season. But, regroup the Warriors did, and behind a team approach Brother Rice claimed its third consecutive Division 1 state title on Saturday by scoring 313 points.

“These kids understand that the Warrior on their chest is more important than any individual glory. It’s nice to win state championships, but these guys always put the team first,” Brother Rice coach Mike Venos said. “They are a great group of kids to coach. We had some seniors that had to sacrifice their individual swimming so they could really put their focus into leading the team and that really helped us.”

The Warriors posted a 313 total while Saline came in second with 234 and Zeeland was third with 211.

Even before the season began, the Warriors were dealing with a serious illness to senior Bobby Powrie and the team also had a few all-state swimmers elect not to return. Despite that adversity, the Warriors found ways to win all season thanks to their depth.

“This was the toughest year of coaching that I think I have had at Rice. We almost lost a kid to bacterial meningitis. We had some kids leave that we were expecting to come and score at the (state) meet. This was just the best team effort I have been around,” Venos said.

The depth was on display in the relays, as the Warriors won two state titles and finished second in the third relay. The team of Alex Margherio, Drew Grady, Jake Zalinski and Jack Grady won the 200 medley relay (1:31.55) while Zalinski, Mason Wilczewski, Margherio and Patrick Olmsted won the 400 freestyle relay (3:05.94).

The lone individual champion for the Warriors was Grady, who came up with a win in the 100 breaststroke (55.18).

“We had a couple of nice individual swims, but our depth carried us through all year and it definitely did (Saturday),” Venos said. “The team effort was the key to the whole thing.”

Novi made a push for a top-5 finish but came in seventh on the day with 134 points. The Wildcats were able to build off their runner-up finish at the county meet by putting up their best-ever finish at the Division 1 finals

“We took huge steps (at the state finals). (Friday) was a huge day for us. We were one of five teams to get all three relay teams in the top eight and we were thrilled with that,” Novi coach Brent Pohlonski said. “We are going to walk out of here feeling great about what we did.”

The Wildcats saw senior Ryan Katulski earn their top finish as he placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.97.

Pohlonski is hoping his team can build off this year’s performance as he felt his team is still learning to compete at the elite level.

“We still need to take another step. We need to learn how to be big-time here two days in a row. That’ll be our goal for next year. We are losing some great seniors, but we are getting some good guys back,” Pohlonski said. “Our guys are really serious about swimming club and working year-round, so we suspect that they will come back next year even faster and ready to go. Hopefully our younger guys saw what it takes to get to this point and how hard you have to work to be great. I think we are a few individuals away from really being able to contend, so we need some of the young guys to step up.”
