DEARBORN – Southfield-Lathrup had no answer for Detroit King’s long-distance bombing in its’ Class A girls basketball regional championship game Thursday night at Dearborn Fordson. Lathrup fell behind midway through second quarter and never re-found its' footing, losing to PSL-champion King, 74-56.

King (22-1) connected on a total of nine 3s in the second and third quarters. Coming out of the half, the Crusaders socked Lathrup with a knockout blow of five consecutive triples in a six-minute span, claiming what turned out to be an insurmountable 58-37 lead going into the fourth quarter. King opened the second half on an 18-8 run.

Micaela Kelly’s 35-footer at the third-quarter buzzer spelled doom for Lathrup down the stretch - Lathrup wouldn't see its' deficit dip below 15 points the rest of the way. Kelly is signed with DePaul.

The Crusaders’ junior combo guard Tia Tedford netted a game-high 20 points. Her five straight points early in the third quarter (deep 3, steal and lay-up) provided King a 36-28 advantage. Kelly’s 3 at the 4:17 mark of the frame ballooned King’s lead into double figures (42-32) to stay.

Ranked No. 1 in the state to conclude the regular season, Lathrup turned the lights out on its' season and program with a 21-4 record and a repeat OAA Red Division league title in 2016. Lathrup and crosstown-rival Southfield will be merging in the fall.

Longtime Chargers head coach Michelle Marshall was still reeling from her opponents’ 3-point barrage after she spoke to her club in the locker room in the wake of the loss.

“It seemed like they hit every shot they looked at, it was just a rainfall of 3-pointers,” said a befuddled Marshall of King’s second-half spurt.

No. 5-ranked King canned 9-of-14 attempts from beyond the arc in the second and third quarters combined, 11-of-26 overall on the evening. The Crusaders trailed 17-11 following the first quarter, but switched from a triangle-and-two defense – focusing on Lathrup stars Deja Church and Antoinette Miller – to a zone attack, which seemed to be the difference along with King’s steamy long-range marksmanship. They went on top 29-25 at the break.

Zone defenses have caused Lathrup issues in the past.

“We’ve struggled against zones, we take a while finding the gaps and tonight we just took too long getting comfortable,” Marshall said.

Depth was also an issue for the Chargers.

“We lacked energy in the second half, we were handcuffed a bit by an inexperienced bench,” she said.

Church and Miller put in 18 and 15 points respectively. Senior center Taiye Bello recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Miller is inked with Cincinnati, Bello and her twin sister Kehinde are destined for the Big Ten and the University of Minnesota. Church is one of the best juniors in the state and currently uncommitted.

Marshall, in the head-coaching seat at Lathrup since the 1994 campaign, will be throwing her name into the hat for the coaching job at merged Southfield Academy of Arts & Technology. She won a state championship with the Chargers in 2005.
