MOUNT PLEASANT - Two straight losses by fall was a prelude to the inevitable for the Oxford Wildcats during Saturday’s Division 1 team state wrestling semifinal round against Hartland at McGuirk Arena.

The Eagles had too much firepower for the Wildcats, as they forged a 42-19 victory to advance to the Division 1 state finals against Davison, who beat Novi Detroit Catholic Central 29-25.

Oxford, missing key elements in its lineup throughout the season from injuries, still managed to get to the state tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years.

“I’m real proud of these guys, they all battled,” Oxford coach Paul McDevitt said. “We were a little overmatched. Hartland’s tough from top to bottom.”

Indeed, the Eagles’ powerful upper weights set the tone, beginning at 152 where they won five of the first six matches. Sage Castillo (152) and Logan Vish (160) pinned their opponents in identical times of 1:59.

Oxford’s Brian Schlickenmeyer stopped the onslaught with a pin over Aaron Laird at 215, but the Eagles resumed their dominance as heavyweight Brandon Krol began a string of four straight victories.

Hartland, whose only dual meet loss was to Catholic Central in January, now sets its sights on the finals once more. The Eagles have won a number of district, regional and league titles, and have been to the state tournament 15 straight times. But the highest they’ve finished is second.

“Obviously, we’ve been here before,” Hartland coach Todd Cheney said. “It’s time to knock down that wall, it’s time to get one (state title) for our boys and our community.”

Oxford lost to Hartland 48-12 in January and there wasn’t much different this time. Vinny Vackaro (135) and Alex Hrisopoulos (140) also earned victories for the Wildcats, who ended their season at 24-9. Hatland is 33-1.
