MOUNT PLEASANT - The new team state wrestling tournament venue at Central Michigan University's McGuirk Arena may need getting used to for some participants.

But top seed Hartland made itself right at home, beating No. 8 seed Temperance Bedford 53-24 Friday in the Division 1 team state quarterfinals.

The Eagles, making their 15th straight appearance at the state tournament, earned a semifinal match against Oxford, a 40-28 winner over Hudsonville, in Saturday's matches. The winner meets the survivor of the Davison-Novi Detroit Catholic Central semifinal matchup.

"We're still chasing that (state) title," said Hartland coach Todd Cheney, whose squad entered the season as the No. 1 ranked Division 1 team in the state.

Lucas LaForge started the Eagles off right with a 6-3 decision over Bedford's Dominic Vasquez at 171. But the Kicking Mules retaliated in the next match, with 189-pounder Gabriel Elarton pinning Andrew Spisz in the third period as Bedford took a 6-3 lead.

The Kicking Mules led 12-3 before the Eagles took flight.

Heavyweight Brandon Krol earned a 4-2 triumph over Tim Stevens, beginning a 9-0 run of match victories by the Eagles, who quickly sewed up the win.

Seven of them came by fall, and one was a technical fall as Hartland took charge.

Hartland (32-1), whose only loss this season is to Catholic Central, topped Oxford earlier this season.

But postseason matches can be vastly different.

"We've been testing ourselves, getting ourselves ready for these matches all year," said Oxford coach Paul McDevitt.

This is the eighth straight season Hartland has reached the Division 1 semifinal round. Last year Brighton beat Hartland in the state finals.
