To say that Destiny Pitts’ presence has grown since she first stepped foot on campus at Detroit Country Day would be no stretch of the truth, going from a precocious freshman starter to one of the driving forces in last year’s state title run as a sophomore.

In part, that’s because she’s grown, too — literally.

Listed at 5-foot-10 as a freshman, 5-11 as a sophomore, and now at 6 foot as a junior, Pitts has put on six pounds of muscle between last year and this one.

“I’ve been benching more, and I can see a big difference,” she admitted earlier this season. “I think made my most improvement on my defense, staying low, getting quicker, so I can check the point guards. I know in college, everybody’s going to be quicker, and I’m going to have check all sorts of guards, all the time.”

No wonders why Pitts — a dominating force who has offers from Minnesota, Michigan State, Michigan, Kansas State, Western Michigan and Marquette, among others — is the top player in Oakland County coming into this season. She’s one of the top players in the entire state, as well.

Here’s a look at the top 25 players in the county this winter, along with a list of the next 25, and a handful of freshmen to keep an eye on:

2. Deja Church, 5-foot-8 Jr. Southfield-Lathrup — Nearly as coveted a 2017 recruit as Pitts (offers already from four Big Ten schools, including Michigan, as well as Marquette, DePaul and St. John’s), Church is a flat-out scorer who does her best work muscling her way to the basket, and getting shots off in traffic.

3. Antoinette Miller, 5-foot-7 Sr. Southfield-Lathrup (Cincinnati) — Nicknamed ‘Trigger’ for her quick release, Miller is as quick as they come. The floor general for the highly-talented and highly-touted Chargers, she can both distribute or get her own shot.

4. Kristen Nelson, 5-foot-8 Sr. Farmington Hills Harrison (Southern Illinois) — Had to carry the load last season with two key injured teammates, and did a more than respectable job, considering the competition level. One of the best ballhandlers in the area, she Nelson can penetrate to set up her own shot, or others’.

5. Amber Stephens, 5-foot-7 Sr. Farmington Hills Harrison (Wayne State) — Back from missing half of last season with a knee injury, Stephens is making up for lost time, scoring in bunches. She’s a steal, even for a solid Division II program like Wayne State.

6. Taiye Bello, 6-foot-3 Sr. Southfield-Lathrup (Minnesota) — Always the more advanced of the two Bello twins — both headed to play for the Gophers — Taiye Bello uses her long wingspan to alter any number of shots, and grab rebound after rebound. Both twins can run the court like gazelles, much faster than most players their height.

7. Mackenzie Harbort, 5-foot-6 Jr. Birmingham Seaholm — After two seasons in which her talent may have been ahead of her understanding of the game, Harbort has matured into one of the county’s best guards, despite near-constant defensive attention from opponents. Came into her junior year with 742 career points in just two seasons (averaged 19 ppg as a sophomore).

8. Kayla Luchenbach, 6-foot-1 Soph. Clarkston — Now the go-to post player for the Wolves, after the graduation of last year's No. 1 player, Erika Davenport, Luchenbach is a force in the paint on both ends of the floor. She’ll be one of the more sought-after signees in the 2018 class.

9. Haley Tewes, 5-foot-11 Sr. Waterford Kettering (Gannon) — Deceptively fast at her height, Tewes can blow past defenders with the ball in her hand, or shoot over them. She has great court vision, as well. Will join her older sister, Lauren, at Gannon next season.

10. Kaitlyn Smith, 5-foot-9 Sr. Holly — Hidden up in the Flint Metro, the under-appreciated Smith was named the Tri-County Player of the Year by one publication last season, and earned honorable mention all-state honors. Has started all four seasons for the Bronchos, and her role has gotten bigger each season.

11. Amanda Sape, 6-foot-3 Jr. Bloomfield Hills — Came into her junior season already holding the school records for blocks in a game, season and career, and the single-season and career rebounding records, as well. Is a force in the middle that few teams can match up with.

12. Alex Troy, 5-foot-5 Sr. Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes — The Lakers’ leading scorer last year, and their best defender, things coalesced into a trip to the semifinals when Lakes just put the ball in her hands, and let her make plays last year.

13. Evelyn Wischmeyer, 5-foot-11 Sr. Lake Orion — A three-year starter and four-year varsity player, the long-armed and talented Wischmeyer averaged nearly a double-double last season (10 points, 7 rebounds), and is one of the reasons the Dragons have high hopes for this season.

14. Stormeigh Mattison, 5-foot-9 Sr. Southfield — While each of her Southfield teammates can do one or two things well, Mattison is the one who can do it all for the Bluejays — score, rebound, defend, lead.

15. Kayla Russell, 5-foot-8 Sr. Clarkston — Has come into her own in an expanded role as a senior, attacking the basket with abandon, and scoring in bunches. She’s also taken over a large portion of the leadership role for the Wolves, along with classmate Alyssa Bey.

16. Kierra Crockett, 5-foot-11 Jr. North Farmington — A good rebounder with good instincts for the game, Crockett is being counted on as the Raiders’ go-to scorer this season. She’s dynamic enough to take over games in stretches, too.

17. Kaela Webb, 5-foot-6 Soph. Birmingham Detroit Country Day — Exploded onto the scene in the Class B state championship game last season, and hasn’t let up since. Height notwithstanding, have as much upside as any player on this list.

18. Lillia Schoof, 6-foot-0 Jr. Waterford Kettering — On the varsity since her freshman season, the athletic Schoof — she broke the school record in the 100 hurdles as a freshman — broke out in the second half of last season, becoming the Captains’ go-to offensive source in the postseason, averaging a near double-double.

19. Kehinde Bello, 6-foot-4 Sr. Southfield-Lathrup (Minnesota) — The taller of the two twins, Kehinde Bello uses her 6-foot-6 wingspan as a stellar weak-side shotblocker, and rebounder. She’s improved her offensive game, as well, both back to the basket, and facing it.

20. Courtney Callahan, 5-foot-3 Soph. Walled Lake Northern — The diminutive Callahan burst onto the scene as a freshman last year, earning all-KLAA honors. She can hit the outside shot, penetrate to the basket, and set teammates up.

21. Quinoche Carter, 5-foot-9 Soph. Birmingham Groves — The sophomore proved last year she can get buckets in bunches but, after an offseason of work, is more well-rounded, and more comfortable as a team leader.

22. Akwia Tilton, 5-foot-6 Sr. Birmingham Roeper — A tremendous all-around athlete (plays three varsity sports), Tilton takes over the Roughriders’ point position this season, after averaging 11.5 points per game as an off-guard last season.

23. Peyton Jones, 5-foot-6 Sr. South Lyon East — It’s now her team after the graduation of the program’s first Division I player, Gabi Bird, and Jones’ increased scoring average already this season shows how much the Cougars are depending on her.

24. Cheryl Setlock, 5-foot-4 Sr. Wixom St. Catherine — One of those dive-on-the-floor, run-through-a-wall players who, when you look up, somehow already has 20 points.

25. Emma Sobczynski, 5-foot-10 Sr. Stoney Creek — Along with fellow senior Courtney Eckhout, the athletic and versatile Sobczynski — a four-year player — will have to carry the scoring load for the Cougars in the absence of all-state point guard Maria Zandi, and is more than capable of doing so.
