It was another coronation for one Oakland Activities Association Red Division girls golf team at the state finals on Saturday, and heartbreak for another.

For the third straight season and fifth time since 2006, Birmingham Seaholm captured the Division 2 state title with a two-day score of 664 (335-329), 13 shots ahead of second-place Midland Dow. South Lyon finished third at 692.

“It’s every bit as great the third time as it is the first,” Seaholm co-coach Cathie Fritz said. “The girls were very optimistic and very focused on the here and now.”

Seaholm entered the day with a two-shot lead, but easily separated itself with a 329 on Saturday’s second day at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek.

Seaholm had three golfers in the top-10, led by Jordan Michalak, who finished in a tie for third individually with a 159 (80-79).

Catherine Markley and Allegra Cunningham finished in a tie for eighth at 164.

Seaholm is notorious for not sending its “A” team to various tournaments in the regular season, including the Oakland County tournament, but Fritz said there is a method to that madness.

“We have 52 girls on our team and we have quite a few girls that would shoot 90 to 105, so we really spent the month of September figuring how who could handle the tension of the state tournament,” Fritz said. “We definitely weren’t sandbagging.”

Priscilla Harding of South Lyon and Alexandra Robb of Birmingham Marian tied for sixth with each other after shooting a 161.

At the Division 1 finals, the news unfortunately wasn’t as good for Rochester. The mantra that ever shot matters reared its head at Grand Valley State, with Rochester finishing as the state runner-up despite finishing in a first-place tie with Traverse City West.

Rochester and Traverse City West finished with identical scores of 685, but West was awarded the title on the fifth-golfer tiebreaker.

Bloomfield Hills was third with a 692, Troy finished fourth with a 695, Novi shot a 696 to finish fifth, while Lake Orion and Farmington Hills Mercy tied for seventh with a 700.

“I look at it for what the team did,” Rochester coach Jeff Haney. “It’s unbelievable this year to finish the way we did at the state finals. It’s just a little disappointing.”

The highest individual finishers from the area were Lauren Ingle of Stoney Creek and Moyea Russell of Lake Orion, who tied for third with identical final totals of 158, three shots behind champion Julia Dean of Brighton.

Veronica Haque of Rochester tied for fifth with a 160, Alana Jones of North Farmington finished in a tie for seventh with Kamryn Johnston and Alex Hatz of Novi, all shooting a 164.

- In the Division 3 state finals at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood was the highest area finisher, taking third with a 733. Birmingham Detroit Country Day was fourth with a 735.

Spring Lake destroyed the field, shooting a 661 to win by 70 shots over second-place Goodrich.

Individually, Danielle Staskowski of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep finished fourth with a 159 (82-77) and Mallika Brar of Country Day finished eighth with a 166 (85-81).
