FARMINGTON HILLS - Throughout the Raider Relays, Royal Oak’s girls smiled, clapped and chummed along with each other, almost as if they were at an outdoor social rather than a track and field invitational.

But the Ravens were taking care of business nonetheless, getting points here and there throughout a sunny Friday afternoon at North Farmington High School.

When they were told that they had won the meet, they couldn’t believe it. But the point totals indeed were in their favor as they took their happiness quotient to another level with squeals of delight.

Royal Oak scored 78 points to finish ahead of runnerup Regina (68), third-place Farmington Hills Harrison and fourth-place North Farmington at the seven-team meet.

On the boys side, however, Troy Athens, originally believed to have placed second, took home the second place trophy. But a recount in the scores unveiled an error, according to Jeff Simpson, meet manager.

He emailed that two events points were not included in the original scores, thus altering the outcome. Canton still won with 85 points, but Farmington Hills Harrison was second with 67, Stoneuy Creek was third with 63 and Troy Athens wound up fourth with 60.

Harrison won three events, including the shuttle hurdle and 4 x 200-meter relays, and also the discus relay where the trio of Rapana Filemu, Omaury Rodgers and David Johnson combined for the victory. Michael Ojemudia contributed on two winning relays.

The Red Hawks placed at least second in four events, including the shot put and discus relays, and won the Raider Relay with the quartet of Justin Koch, Max Adamo, Avery Thomas and Ryan Mooney.

“It’s a great feeling, we had a lot of guys who contributed who don’t normally contribute,” said Athens coach Tom Cook, before the error was discovered about two hours after the meet.

Royal Oak’s Ben Hill, a two-time state meet runnerup in the 3,200, ran on the winning 6,400 relay and the distance medley relay, where he overcame an 80-meter deficit on his 1,600 leg, joining Marcus Jackson, Patrick Fegan and Milo Taylor. “I was trying to negative split,” Hill said, “but my boys ran really well … a good effort today.”

For the girls, Royal Oak won four events and placed at least second in six of the 13 events. With the meet’s outcome, veteran Ravens coach Clyde Ewell couldn’t believe it.

“A bit of a surprise because I have a lot of banged up runners,” he said. “(But) our distance runners held us together. (And) our field events did pretty well. My goal today was to get tthrough safely and they performed very well, much better than I expected. I’m very proud of them.”

Grace Gutler ran on two winning relays and the Ravens capped their evening with a victory in the 4 x 400 relay as Krista Gazday, Katie Forsyth, Kaitlin Cross and Emily Hill formed the winning quartet.

Harrison’s Maya Roberts, one of the state’s top hurdlers, got the Hawks to a big lead in the shuttle hurdle relay as they won by eights seconds, and she also anchored the winning 4 x 100 relay.

“It was good,” she said of her opening leg on the shuttle hurdles relay. “It was weird going from the opposite end.

North Farmington won the long jump, sprint medley and 4 x 200 relays as Raven Tatum contributed to all three victories for the Raiders.
