Wildcat boys squeak past rising Lions

NOVI - Typical weather conditions greeted South Lyon and Novi athletes in the season-opening outdoor track and field meet Tuesday at Novi High School.

To no one’s surprise, around partially-frozen lakes in the area, temperatures in the low 40s was the norm.

But the sun was out and the races were run, and none were more important than the final one, where Novi’s boys 4 x 400 relay squad broke a 66-66 tie with a victory as the Wildcats squeezed out a 71-66 triumph over an improved South Lyon squad.

On the girls side, Novi took an 87-49 decision as Hannah Lonergan won the 1,600 and ran legs on the winning 4 x 800 and 4 x 400 relays, and Hannah Hood-Blaxille won the high jump as the Wildcats won four of the five field events. Hadley Peterson also added a victory in the 800 and Karenna Roest won the 300 hurdles for the Wildcats.

South Lyon, though, got in its points as Emma Bauer set another school record in the pole vault (11-feet-2), Liberty Romanik won the 100, Madison Swiatlowski the 200 and the Lions won the 400- and 800-meter relays.

“It felt great,” said Romanik of her victory in the 100.

“Our girl sprinters are young and not cohesive yet,” said Novi coach Marsha Reid, who yielded the speed portion to the Lions.

For the boys, the Wildcats had a much tougher time. The Lions from South Lyon roared and served notice they’d be a team to be reckoned with, as Kevin Schopa won the 110 and 300 hurdles, Jerod Allen won the 800 and 1,600 and Nick Buckhalter leaped 13-feet-6 to win the pole vault.

He missed on his attempts at 14-6, but apparently he has staked his claim as one of the area's top vaulters. “I jumped 15-3 last week,” Buckhalter said, (and) to jump 13-6 was kinda lukewarm. I could’ve done better.”

Novi’s Joost Plaetinck ran a leg on the winning 3,200 relay, and led a sweep of the 3,200, and Dorian Haney won the discus throw for the Wildcats, who were tied with the Lions going into the 1,600 relay.

The race was up for grabs after three legs, but Novi’s Nate Hall pushed hard the final straightway to run away from Allen.

“So much pain,” moaned Hall after the race.

“That was so fun,” said Josh Holcomb, the leadoff runner for the Wildcats, who also had Collin Thomas and Steve MacPherson on the relay.
