NORTHVILLE >> The storms which postponed the annual Mustang Invitational cross country meet Tuesday were nowhere to be found Wednesday at Cass Benton Park.

And that was good for the Northville coaches and meet organizers, who had dry conditions on hand, and the runners, who engaged in harrier warfare on the 3.1-mile course under sunny skies and mild temperatures in one of the first competitions of the season.

One race was for 11th and 12th graders and another was for ninth and 10th graders. While no team scores were kept, several teams had notable showings, particularly defending girls Division 1 state champion Northville, whose Lexa Barrott clocked 18:57 in winning by more than 40 seconds. She was followed by Emma Herrmannn (fourth) and Hailey Harris (sixth). Along with Mirai Kobyashi (11th) and Paige Zimmer (18th), the Mustangs had five finishers among the top 19.

For the boys, Romeo’s Jacob Domalgaski outdueled Northville’s Conor Naughton and Lakeland’s Blake McComas to win the boys 11th and 12th grade race. He clocked 16:36 with Naughton following in 16:42 and McComas coming in at 16:46.

McComas led a portion of the race, while Naughton had to fight his way back into contention after an early spill. “I took a fall in the first mile ... fell back to sixth or seventh,” said Naughton, “so coming back was pretty good.”

Domagalski, coming off a strong track and field season, had victory on his mind. “I thought I could (win),” he said. “I like to go in with that mentality. I knew some good runners would be here. (But) it’s good to start off that way.”

Lakeland’s Kyle Garbovits (10th), Trevor Learmont (17th) and Ian Fulton (18th) gave the Eagles four placers in the top 20. Northville’s Jason Ferrante (seventh) was the Mustangs’ second finisher with Mark Castellano (19th) Peter Martin (20th) and Sam Kremke (21st) following.

Northville’s girls strength is in all classes as the Mustangs had four finishers in the top 12 in the 9th/10th grade race with Cayla Eckenroth winning in 19:45.

Barrott, though, gives Northville a solid front runner. With plenty of big meet experience, she was confident entering the 11th/12th grade race. “I knew that I was probably going to be by myself,” said the junior, who nevertheless had to keep her composure during the last mile. “I was really dieing. I didn’t think I was hydrated enough.”

Walled Lake Northern’s girls also showed well as Darcy Kimberlin (seventh), Jackie Woods (eighth) and Holly Mattson (12th) helped the Knights put four runners in the top 21, with Leah Oldham (21st) the team’s fifth finisher.

Novi’s Hannah Lonergan placed third in 19:58 and Grace MacDonald of Birmingham Groves was 23rd.

In the 9th and 10th graders race, Eckenroth led four Mustang runners among the top 12.

Eckenroth also won by more than 40 seconds as she led from the start. Runnerup Brianna Mulrooney of Walled Lake Northern secured second by outdueling Churchill’s Kathleen George in the final half mile. Mulrooney clocked 20:32.

Catching Eckenroth was a monumental task for the rest of the field, but the threat always hovered in her mind. “I’m always worried about it,” she said, “but you have to keep pushing yourself.”

Ben Cracraft of Northville won the boys 9th/10th grade race in 17:30 and Lakeland’s Zack Werth placed third in 17:56.
