DETROIT – His arm was like gold.

Senior hurler Mike Murley pitched Madison Heights Bishop Foley to its third straight Catholic League C-D Division championship on the baseball field Thursday afternoon, tossing a 2-hitter and striking out nine to beat Pontiac Notre Dame Prep in the CHSL Finals 3-0 down at Comerica Park.

Murley, signed with Wayne State, took a no-hit bid into the seventh.

“Mike’s a bulldog,” said Ventures skipper Buster Sunde of Murley’s sensational effort. “He’s lives to compete and that’s what he went out and did today.”

Collecting another crown was all that was on Murley’s mind when he took the mound.

“To keep winning, that’s the only goal” he said. “We want to compete for championships, year-in and year-out, no matter what. Knowing that is all I need to motivate me.”

Bishop Foley (24-2) is the three-time defending state champion in Division 3. Fellow Wayne State-signee Brad Baldwin’s RBI single broke a scoreless tie in the fifth and senior David Chung quickly followed with a 2-RBI base hit to give the Ventures some breathing room.

Notre Dame Prep (20-5) was appearing in its second CHSL Finals in a row. Fighting Irish junior pitcher William Mullen struck out eight in defeat.
