Friends, family jam auditorium lobby for signing ceremony

LAKE ORION - The place to be Wednesday at Lake Orion High School was not in class, but at a ceremony where nine student-athletes made their college choices official by signing National Letters of Intent.

Colorful balloons made for a festive atmosphere among what seemed like a cast of thousands crowded into the school auditorium vestibule to witness the occasion.

Dozens of parents, fellow students, friends and coaches armed with digital cameras documented the occasion while student athletes signed away.

Im really excited, said Madison Hargraves, among the signees who dressed for success for the event. Hargraves will play volleyball at Newberry College in South Carolina. She was sold on the campus. It was really pretty and its warm down there, Hargraves said. Im ready for a new experience.

Others included Casey Stribbell, who committed to track and cross country at Oakland University, and Anna Dietz, who will run cross country at Hope College.

Stribbell has a 3.95 grade point average and plans on studies for pre-medicine.

My cousin runs for the team and he encouraged me to check it out, said Stribbell, who is only 16 years old. Im a young senior.

Dietz wants to find out what college athletics is all about. I think itll be a totally different experience, said the senior. Im excited to jump in and see what I can do.

Ryan Solarczyk and Brad Chisholm will be teammates on the Adrian College football team, while Jimmy Budreau is headed for Trine Univesity in Angola, Ind. for basketball and Connor Grant gets ready for Kalamazoo College, where hell play baseball.

Solarczyk, Chisholm and Grant, a quarterback on the football team, were all All-OAA Red selections in football, along with Dominick Giovinazzo, who will play football at Northwood University. All helped the Dragons to a 7-3 record last season and an appearance in the state football playoffs.

I just like the facilities and the defensive coordinator is an alumnus of Lake Orion, said Chisolm, It was a deal closer for me.

Grant, who plans to major in business management, is confident in his abilities.

I feel like I can be the guy most people can count on and definitely be (among) the leaders, he said.

David Moore, who chummed with teammate Bridger Smart after the ceremony, will wrestle at Trine University. Moore has picked up mountain biking as a conditioning tool for wrestling and has done well.
