Winning the Catholic League Division 1 title isn't anything new to Birmingham Marian. The Mustangs have won seven straight league championships.

But Saturday's title at Sacred Heart allowed Marian to win both the regular season and tournament titles in the same season for the first time in four years.

It didn't come easy, however. Their perennial foe, Farmington Hills Mercy, gave them a battle to the end. Marian swept the doubles en route to 40 team points. Mercy, which swept the singles, finish just behind with 38.

"Our doubles played really well (today)," Marian coach Lincoln Wirgau said. "We needed Taty (Dadabbo) and Bianca (Emde) to set the tone by winning their flight (at No. 1 doubles). The rest of the doubles followed their lead."

Dadabbo and Emde defeated Pontiac Notre Dame Prep's Julie and Annie Boniface, 6-3, 6-2, in the championship match. It was the only flight which did not feature a Marian-Mercy matchup in the championship round.

Marian's Mollie MacEachern and McKenna Landis beat Mercy's Sarah Hinrichs and Julia Flanagan, 6-4, 6-0, to win at No. 2 doubles. Mallory Hudson and Caroline Cibulas beat Mercy's Emily McCann and Carly Demkowicz, 6-2, 6-1, in the 3-doubles final. And Katie Champion and Marta Colosimo wrapped up the doubles sweep for Marian with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win over Mercy's Megan Nadalski and Cathy Lowrance.

Mercy flexed its muscles in singles, as Winnie Karoub, Kathryn Dunleavy, Bridgette Conniff and Gillian Toler beat their Marian counterparts in the finals.

Karoub beat the Mustang's Lauren Dietz, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. At No. 2, Dunleavy topped Breann Lunghamer, 6-2, 7-5. Conniff beat Catherine Yaldoo in straight sets at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6 (4). And Toller needed three sets to defeat Sophie Balardo, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3.

"Our singles played some very close matches and competed well," Wirgau said. "But it was a total team effort with each flight getting to the finals. We hope to build off this and use it for regionals on Thursday."
