TROY – As play began to wind down Saturday at the Oakland Activities Association Red Tennis Tournament, no one really knew which team would emerge victorious.

Not the least of which was Bloomfield Hills coach Chris Dobson.

“We really made it a point to not count points today,” Dobson said. “We just focused on playing one match at a time and trying to play to our seeds.”

That the Black Hawks did. And it served them well. Bloomfield Hills edged out regular-season champion Clarkston by a mere two points to capture the tournament title Saturday at Troy High School. Bloomfield Hills sent seven flights to the championship match and cashed in with two titles, those coming at Nos. 1-2 doubles.

Senior Erin Weingarten and freshman Maddie Fox defeated Clarkston’s Alex Whall and Katie Hubregsen in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0, to win the No. 1 doubles championship. Weingarten and Fox were the 3-seed entering the tournament, but beat the top two seeds en route to their title.

Their teammates, seniors Brittany Silverman and Charlotte Garrison, beat Clarkston’s Caitlin McCaghy and Mackenzie Sowers in straight sets at No. 2 doubles. Silverman and Garrison did not drop a set all day.

“I think we just played up to our seeding and everything came through, as you would hope,” said Dobson, whose team fell to Clarkston 7-2 in their dual match. “I couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out today, in all honesty.”

On the surface, it looked as if Clarkston had too much firepower as the day progressed. The Wolves swept the singles competition, led by senior Lexi Baylis at No. 1. She defeated Bloomfield Hills senior Mollie Fox, 6-2, 6-2, to cap off a day in which she lost just eight games in three matches.

“I feel I played pretty well. I normally tend to get into the season, start playing better and better as the season goes on,” said Baylis, who has lost just one match this year. “It’s all about playing my game, making sure I’m ready for the state tournament. All these matches are just practice. States is what really matters.”

Sophomore Isabella Spindler and seniors Dana and Paige Olsen followed Baylis’ lead, all bringing home titles at 2-3-4 singles for the Wolves. None of them dropped a set, either. Spindler defeated Bloomfield Hills’ Kerry Hu, 6-2, 6-1, in the final at No. 2 singles. Dana Olsen beat Seaholm’s Claire Markley, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3, while Paige Olsen topped Bloomfield Hills’ Meryl Reams, 7-6, (5), 6-3, in the No. 4 title match.

Still, it was the Black Hawks ability to score well at nearly every flight that helped them score 62 team points to edge out Clarkston (60). Seaholm won a pair of titles and finished third with 56 points. Freshmen Lisa Johnston and Sophie Dixon beat Bloomfield Hills’ Marie Baenen and Esther Yi in the 4-doubles final, 6-2, 6-2, while Emily Benderoff and Jessica Morganroth topped Bloomfield Hills’ Rebecca Stavinsky and Keely Baer in the 5-doubles final, 6-2, 6-1.

Troy, which finished fifth behind West Bloomfield, won the other flight championship, that coming at No. 3 doubles. Junior Julianne Fava and sophomore Leena Penumalee defeated Seaholm’s Emily McDermott and Meaghan Flynn, 6-2, 6-3, in the final.

West Bloomfield finished with 44 team points. Troy had 40, followed by North Farmington (24), Rochester Adams (20) and Birmingham Groves (18).

The overall OAA Red title is still up in the air. Because of its regular season title and second place finish Saturday, Clarkston has clinched at least a share of the overall championship. Bloomfield Hills and West Bloomfield still have to finish their dual match. If the Black Hawks win, they will share the title with Clarkston. If West Bloomfield wins, the Wolves win it outright.
