BIRMINGHAM — Back-to-back track meets are a rare occasion but Waterford Mott handled the situation well.

After competing at the Saline Invitational Friday, the Corsairs came back Saturday to win the annual Brother Rice Relays, capping a tough week of competition.

Mott scored 39 points to finish ahead of runnerup Dearborn (25) and third-place Brother Rice (24), who was just ahead of Southfield and West Bloomfield, who each scored 17 points to tie for fourth place.

The Corsairs notched victories in five relays, showing little affects of their Friday evening competition.

“Good 16 hours of work, son,” said Mott coach Ryan Robinson, shortly after Ryan Jr, anchored the winning distance medley relay.

Robinson placed second in the 3,200-meter run Friday behind Royal Oak’s Ben Hill at Saline, and also ran on the winning 4 x 1,600 relay Saturday.

“We like to pride ourselves on doing Saline and coming right here,” said Robinson Jr., who joined Luke Peterson, Kyler Bush and Tommy Osika on the winning 4 x 1,600 relay. Nick Arnold, Kyle Miller and Sam Albaugh joined Robinson on the distance medley relay.

“That was a good week for us, a lot of good wins,” said Corsairs coach Ryan Robinson, who wasn’t punishing his team with the heavy workload. “That’s not a mistake, that’s planned, (And) they’ve come to embrace it. Now we can transition run and sharpen the kids a bit. It’s a midseason challenge that they’ve responded very well to.”

Brennan Munley set a school record Friday at Saline with a 4:16 1,600, and anchored the winning sprint medley and 4 x 400 relay where Zach Loll, Bogdan Grymut and Osika joined him.

Munley, who clocked an unofficial 49.7 in the 4 x 400, held off Ross Williams of Birmingham Groves on the anchor leg in a nip-and-tuck battle of two of the area’s top track athletes.

Simon Albaugh, Sam Albaugh, Kyler Bush and Osika ran on the winning 4 x 800 relay (8:17.88) and Eric Valente, Kyle Miller, Grymut and Munley comprised the winning sprint medley squad.

Brother Rice’s quartet of Delano Madison, Chiebuka Onwuzurike, Corey Lacanari and Riley Maher won the 4 x 100 relay (43.63) and Southfield’s foursome of Ray Buford, Matt Falcon, Travis Cole and Devin McLeod won the 4 x 200 relay (1:32.03), capitalizing on Brother Rice’s disqualification from an exchane zone violation.

Still, Southfield coach Richard Crist lamented the Bluejays’ poor exchanges in the relays, dashing his hopes of posting some faster times.

Birmingham Seaholm won the discus relay as Mason Hardy, Matt Rothschild and Karl Marback teamed for a distance of 354-feet-9 1/2.

Brother Rice and Mott were close in the first leg of the 4 x 1600 relay as John Penington (Rice) and Peterson led the group. Penington pulled away but the Corsairs came back on the successive legs.

“I wished I could’ve kept up with John Penington,” said Peterson, whose teammates got the lead back.

West Bloomfield’s final two legs, Brandon Coats and Branden Burton surged on Rice and grabbed second place for the Lakers.

Seaholm placed second in the 4 x 800 relay with Stephen Young, Luke Wallace, Liam Little and Ross Bernard comprising the group.
