Utica blanks Athens in soccer action WITH TOUT VIDEOS

UTICA – The Utica Chieftains defeated the Troy Athens Red Hawks 3-0 in girls soccer action Friday night.

After a scoreless first half, the Chieftains got on the board with 21:01 left to play when Elena Simopoulos fired a cross to the left side and Lauren Cheney headed it back across the goal and into the net, past a diving attempt from Troy Athens goalkeeper Amanda Harris. “Elena couldn’t have delivered a better ball, and Cheney got herself right in the right position, and it’s pretty,” Utica head coach David Moran said.

Utica did a better job of maintaining possession for most of the game, and they converted their chances in the second half, particularly on set pieces with the Chieftains picking up two goals off of re-starts. “Athens lives and dies by the set pieces, and for us to come out and get a couple goals off of set pieces is good. They might not have been off the direct set piece, but second effort,” Moran said.

Amy Misze and Gina Pellillo added goals down the stretch for the Chieftains who improve to 2-1 on the year. “It’s great. It’s encouraging. These girls are really learning. They’re ambitious and hard working. It’s coming together pretty quick and we’re looking forward to the rest of the season,” Moran said.

Troy Athens falls to 1-1. “They were just better than we were tonight at all the little things,” Athens head coach Todd Heugh said. The Red Hawks are still a work in progress as they try to integrate the players on a young team. “We have potential. We have a lot of bright spots. We have to put the pieces in the right place, and I don’t know where that is yet. Every single girl on our team we played tonight, and we played every single girl on our team against Rochester the other night. We’re still trying to give kids chances to step up and see who is going to be in our lineup.”
