Troy Athens opens season with shutout win over Rochester WITH TOUT VIDEOS

ROCHESTER – The Troy Athens Red Hawks opened the season with a 2-0 win over the Rochester Falcons in OAA Red girls soccer action on a frigid Wednesday night.

“It was a pretty even game, and probably could have gone either way,” Athens head coach Todd Heugh said.

Kendall Wachowski gave Athens the lead exactly five minutes into the second half, after following her own free kick into the penalty area.

Midway through the period, Alyssa Cowper gave the Red Hawks some insurance when she scored on a breakaway.

“Both Kendall and Alyssa are four year varsity players, so they’ve got a lot of experience, whereas everybody behind them doesn’t have as much varsity experience as they do. So we’re going to rely a little bit on their speed,” Heugh said.

Rochester had the better of play in the first half, but could not convert its chances.

“I thought we had our chances in the first half. We got quite a few crosses, just not people in the box right now,” Rochester head coach Colby Cunningham said. “The more we play together on an outdoor field, the more we’re going to start to gel with everyone and come together as a team. And that’s going to be the biggest thing this year is kind of everyone pitching in and working together, and kind of figuring out how to break it down,” he added.

The Red Hawks defense then stepped up in the second half, locking down the Falcons and holding Rochester to just 1 shot on goal in the second half.

“I thought we defended pretty well tonight,” Heugh said. “I was pretty happy with whole back line.”

Troy Athens is 1-0 in overall and 1-0 in OAA Red. Rochester is 0-1 overall and in OAA Red.
