WARREN – At 5-foot-6 and 120 pounds, Daniel Stewart was obviously the smallest guy on the field. It was also pretty obvious that he was the one making the biggest plays.

The sophomore flyweight rushed for three touchdowns and took back a kickoff for another, pacing Warren Lincoln to a 47-22 homecoming victory over Madison Heights Lamphere in an MAC cross-over contest.

Lincoln got off to a 14-0 lead on Stewart’s first two trips into the end zone, counter plays covering 6 and 9 yards. And when Lamphere got some momentum from its first touchdown, Stewart came right back by traveling 91 yards on the ensuing kickoff, making the score 27-7 three minutes before halftime.

“The kick return, it goes to the blockers that I had,” Stewart said. “I’d seen the big hole and I went for it. The other runs, I’d say it goes out to my fullback Micheal Reese; he had my block so I hit the hole hard.”

Stewart also scored Lincoln ’s last touchdown, taking a pitch and rambling 72 yards to paydirt. He finished with 227 yards on 16 carries, for 318 all-purpose yards once the kick return is added. On several of his assignments, Stewart eluded linemen, broke tackles and basically caromed off anyone who crossed his path.

“It was his opportunity to step up and execute,” Lincoln Head Coach Darrius Alexander said. “We know that he’s a playmaker and we put him out on the field to make the most of the opportunities. It’s about the second effort, just believe in yourself and believe your abilities. I want to give it up to the offensive linemen, the hogs; they provided the opportunity for him to make those big plays.”

Alexander said Stewart and his senior brother Derrell (who did not play due to injury) are both gamers.

“Him and his brother, ‘Thing One and Thing Two,’ they push each other in practice and that’s huge. They compete a lot,” Alexander said.

Daniel Stewart said he’s not intimidated having to go up against players that may outweigh him by 150 pounds or more.

“I just play hard,” he said.

Quarterback Darius Totty also had a hand in the other three touchdowns, passing to Burnis Williams and Kelvin Moore for 34 yards and Burnis Williams for 7, before scoring himself on a 10-yard scramble with eight minutes to play, which made it 40-14.

It was the second consecutive win for the Abes (2-4), who dropped their first four contests.

“It’s huge. It’s huge for the program; I’m obviously excited for our players,” Alexander said. “We had a hard start starting off the season falling short of expectations, but I’m just blessed to have the coaching staff that I have; they put the kids in place to be successful. It’s about handling adversity. It’s making adjustments, shuffling guys around, and other guys getting opportunities to be successful and taking advantage of those opportunities. That’s huge.”

Meanwhile, winless Lamphere is dealing with some adversity of its own.

“Unfortunately we just didn’t make stops, and when we get the ball, we have to make sure we don’t turn it over,” Head Coach Jason Charron said. “I think we made some nice plays when we had some opportunities and our kids played hard, we played with some focus, and we’ve got to get better week to week. We’ve just got to get better in all three facets of the game and build some success off one another.”

Rams quarterback Austin Frederick threw touchdown passes of 15 yards to Nate Marsh and 7 yards to Trevor Guilmette. Guilmette also returned a kickoff 83 yards for another touchdown.
