AUBURN HILLS — The Auburn Hills Oakland Christian Lancers led the game from start to finish, but constant comeback surges by the Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest Crusaders left a sour taste in their mouth.

Despite the attempts by Lutheran Northwest to come from behind, Oakland Christian held on for a 31-21 win on Friday night.

“We played good enough to win,” Oakland Christian sophomore quarterback Javarian Smith said. “We got to keep working hard in practice. Go hard every day.”

These modest thoughts were expressed by Smith after scoring two pivotal touchdowns in the Lancers first victory over the Crusaders in 5 years.

Smith completed 13 of his 20 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns, including a 62-yard pass to senior wide receiver Aaron Kostich on the Lancers’ first drive to put them up 7-0.

On the Crusaders’ second drive, Kostich took another one to the house except this time he was a defender. He snagged an errant pass from Lutheran Northwest quarterback Bryan Miscovich and returned the interception 56 yards for the touchdown.

“We started well,” Kostich said. “We’ve been doing that the last three games. We just haven’t been finishing.”

As halftime neared, the Crusaders knew that they couldn’t go into halftime down by a big margin. They started to get their offense together, and with three minutes left in the first half they put some points on the board.

Bryan Miscovich capped off a 76-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Griem. The extra point was no good, but nonetheless they were finally on the board.

On the ensuing kickoff, Javarian Smith ran the kickoff return 95 yards for a touchdown.

“I saw daylight,” Smith said. “Then I cut back up the middle”

Following the big play, the Crusaders led another long drive down the field for another touchdown. Jacob Griem caught another touchdown pass in the back of the end zone, with 58 seconds left in the first half.

With a successful 2-point conversion, the Crusaders were back in business going into halftime only trailing by seven points.

However, the Lancers put the game out of reach when Stephen Nichols caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from Javarian Smith to make it 28-14 midway through the 3rd quarter.

“They’re very athletic,” Lutheran Northwest coach Don Justice said. “They made plays and we didn’t make plays.”

Lutheran Northwest added a late touchdown in the waning moments of the game, on the legs of Bryan Miscovich. After his 5-yard touchdown run, the Crusaders tried an onside kick and nearly recovered it, but the Lancers walked away from the pile with the ball.

“We’re still young,” Crusaders coach Bill Schaffer said. “We’re still learning. We have to keep elevating. We have to peak.”
