It was a wildly entertaining softball game, although certainly stressful for all involved.

And for Beal City, it ended in agonizing fashion.

The host Aggies allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning against Holton in a Division 4 regional championship game, falling 8-7 in what was a back-and-forth contest throughout.

“It was unfortunate it had to end that way because the girls played their tails off and you could tell how badly they wanted it,” Beal City coach John Davis said.

The Aggies end their season with a 26-11 record, while Holton advances to the quarterfinals for the fourth time in five years to meet a familiar foe in Coleman.

Beal City advanced to the regional title game via a 13-1 five-inning win over Mason County Eastern. The Red Devils downed Frankfort 10-9 by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Just like it did in the semifinals, Holton struck last with a three-run bottom of the seventh to stun the Aggies. It came directly after Beal City had scored three in the top of the inning to grab a 5-4 lead.

The Aggies took a 3-0 lead through three innings, scoring once in each frame. Holton fought back with a three-run third, while Beal City took the lead again with a run in the fourth. The Red Devils scored two in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 5-4 before the seventh inning dramatics by both teams.

“The good news for us is that we return everybody from this team next year,” Davis added. “It's still a tough loss, but it's not quite as tough because you know you aren't losing anyone from the team.”

Lyndsey Fillenworth allowed seven hits and struck out six in the semifinal win for the Aggies. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Alli Peak was 3-for-3, while Grace Mindel was 2-for-3 with a triple.

Liz Powell gave up 12 hits and struck out seven while walking three in the championship game. She added a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Lyndsey Fillenworth was 2-for-4, while Kara Lybeer also had a pair of hits.
