Having home-field advantage is one thing but in order to keep it you need to play the game clean.

The Clare High School baseball team had the former and didn't do the latter Saturday during Division 3 regional action from the Brookwood Athletic Complex. As it was the host Pioneers booted the ball early and often and threw it around way too much in a 10-4 regional semifinal loss to Hemlock.

"When you get to this level and don't field the ball cleanly that's what happens," said Clare coach Clint Colosky, whose team closes the 2017 docket out at 30-5-1. "I wish we could have cleaned that aspect of the game up, but we didn't."

For the day the Pioneers threw the ball into runners, missed routine grounders, got burnt on a double steal and gave the Huskies way too many extra opportunities.

Hemlock took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Clare rallied and took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third. Tyler Rodenbo lit the rally with a walk and moved up a station on a Tucker Roe single. David Fremin bunted both runners up a station before Gabe Denton drew an intentional walk to load the sacks. Tyler Smith tied it at 1-1 with an RBI walk before Jeff Allen and Travis Vida both singled in runs.

Hemlock took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame though and added four more in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put it out of reach. The Pioneers scored a single run in the seventh to round the scoring out. Allen paced the offense with two hits and drove in two. He also took the loss on the hill.

For the host Pioneers the defeat ended what turned out to be a great season in that they won the Jack Pine Conference title and a district title.

"We won the conference outright, won a tough district with some very good teams and won three tournaments this season so it was a successful season," Colosky added. "We played a lot of good baseball and I am proud of these guys. In this game it comes down to one day and one game and that's the way it is. I wish we could play the best two of three but that's not how it works."
