Jays in 13th place after opening round of D3 state finals

BIG RAPIDS - The Shepherd High School boys golf team posted a team score of 355 in the opening round of the Division 3 state finals from Katke Golf Course Friday.

The Jays sit in 13th place out of 18 teams in the field after one complete round.

Jackson Lumen Christi leads the field with a 315 while Tawas is second in the team standings, one stroke back with a 316.

Scott Sura led Shepherd on the day with an 84 while Joey Yuncker carded an 88.

Hunter Torpey also chipped in a 91 while Logan Yuncker shot a 92. Kyle Bendele also added in a 99.

Garrett Spink of Hanover Horton posted the top overall round on the day as he shot a 73.

He leads Daniel Shattuck of Tawas by one shot as Shattuck carded a 74 Friday.

The Jays, who won their first conference and regional titles in over a decade this season, close the docket out Saturday with the second round of the D3 state final.
