One Redwing shot hit the goal post and deflected out of bounds.

As a collective whole that was the lone highlight of the day Thursday during Mt. Pleasant's regular-season finale against non-conference foe St. Johns.

Over the course of 80 minutes of play the hosts Oilers (8-7-2) and visitors from St. Johns (10-5-1) both turned in solid defensive performances, limiting one another to very few scoring opportunities as the majority of the play was muddled up in the middle of the field. Shots were few and far between and scoring chances were next to nil outside of a few corner kicks.

The final score of 0-0 reflected this fact.

"They had a couple good set pieces and had a couple corners, but we were pretty good in transition," said Oiler coach John Bunting. "There was a lot of play in the middle of the field and we had couple chances. Neither team got the right ball through today and that's because we both had good defense. Both teams closed space really well and took away any offensive chances."

For the Oilers the tie helped shake off some rust in that they hadn't played in six days. And with districts looming next week they will need to tidy it up in order to make a repeat run at a district title.

"The break allowed us to get a bit healthier but you could see we were a little bit disconnected," said Bunting. "We decompressed a little bit and had a little bit of fun with it but now the pressure starts building with districts."

The Oilers open district action at home Tuesday against Bay City John Glenn. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. from Community Memorial Stadium.
