Panthers claw back late, get split with Jays in TVC Central action WITH GALLERY

A four-run bottom of the sixth inning propelled the Alma High School softball team to a Tri-Valley Central Conference split with host Shepherd Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers (4-4, 3-1), who were trailing 6-5 going into the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, scored four times on two hits, two bunts and two Shepherd errors to claim a 9-6 victory and salvage the split.

Amanda Efaw got the win in relief of Danielle Shaw. Efaw didn't allow a run in one and one-third innings of work. Shaw, who have up a single run in the top of the first, cruised through the fifth inning as she set down 12-straight Bluejays (2-2, 2-2 TVC) before running into trouble in the sixth.

Kemmie Shunk homered for the Panthers, on a 3-2 pitch in the first inning, while Hailey Leister went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Aaliyah Wilson had two hits and two runs scored also.

Adri Nelson had two hits in the nightcap for the hosts while Carrie Smith, Ashleigh Bryant, Emma Stroh, Olivia Raymond and Lindsey Wawersik also had hits.

Haley Peska picked up the win in the 6-2 opening-game victory for Shepherd. She allowed two runs on three hits while walking five and striking out five in seven innings. Kiana Andrews and Peska had RBI hits while Nelson had two doubles and drove in two. Aubrey McCullough also had a hit.

Shaw, Bailey Ward and Efaw all had hits in the opener for Shepherd.
