Irish clinch share of MSAC title, top Bears WITH GALLERY

First goal of the season, check.

On Tuesday night at home the Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy girls basketball team nailed down a share of its second-straight Mid-State Activities Conference title as it raced past Ashley 68-24.

With the win the Irish, who are ranked second in Class D, improve to 16-1 overall and to 10-1 in MSAC play. They can win the conference title outright Thursday night at Montabella.

"Our No. 1 goal this year and every year is to win the league and we take a lot of pride in that," said SHA head coach Damon Brown of SHA's ninth conference title in the last 10 years. "This year with the new teams coming (Breckenridge and Merrill) in we were able to continue the wonderful tradition when it comes to girls basketball."

The Irish put on a dominating performance en route to the title as they took a 23-7 lead at the end of one quarter over the Bears (6-11, 4-8) and never looked back. Yet with the postseason looming the Irish would love nothing more than to make another extended run like they did last en route to a spot in the Class D state title game.

"We have to continue to get better defensively because defense wins championships," said Brown. "More importantly we need to continue to control tempo and that's something we've hung our hat on this year."

For the night Scout Nelson had 21 points while Sophie Ruggles added in 13 points and five rebounds. Lauren Munley added in 14 points and five boards while Hadyn Terwilliger had eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Megan Nowak also had eight points.

Ashley was paced by Anna Fabus who had seven points while Madison Howe had six.
