Ithaca's girls basketball team improved to 4-1 on the season Tuesday as it topped host Shepherd 37-32 in Tri-Valley Conference non-conference action.

The Jackets, who advanced to the Class C semifinals in 2016 but who are now in Class B, took an 11-4 lead at the end of one quarter before the hosts Jays (3-4) came storming back and cut the deficit down to two at 17-15 going into the half.

Shepherd went 5-for-9 from the field in the second quarter and held Ithaca to just three field goals which helped it close the gap.

However, the Jackets pushed the lead to double digits in the third as it went into the fourth quarter up 31-21 and held on from there.

Kayla Belles led the Jackets with 15 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Avery Wood chipped in 12 points, nine of which came in the first half, while Maddie Brock had six points and three rebounds. Sam Vermeesch added in four steals and two assists.

Sam Travis paced the Jays with 13 points while Carey Smith had seven. Kourtney Crawford also had a nice game in the post for the Jays.
