SAGINAW – The dream is real.

Ithaca, a program which is not steeped in tradition like its opponent, is headed to the Class C state semifinals at Michigan State’s Breslin Center.

The Yellowjackets punched their ticket Tuesday night as it outlasted Flint Hamady 51-43 at Saginaw Heritage High School in the quarterfinals, using an 18-2 run in the second and third quarters to pull away.

It will be the first-ever state semifinals appearance for Ithaca girls basketball, while its 24th victory also establishes a new school record.

On Thursday, the Yellowjackets (24-2) will face top-ranked Ypsilanti Arbor Prep (23-2) at Michigan State. Tip-off is approximately 2:50 p.m.

“This is surreal,” Ithaca coach Jessie Rayburn said. “I’m so proud of these girls. This is something they’ve dreamed of doing and it wasn’t a realistic dream or goal. They’ve made it and they’re very happy to be playing on MSU’s floor. They deserve this.”

Only four years ago, there was a very real struggle for the Yellowjackets to win any games as they suffered through a 3-18 campaign. The win total moved to 10 in 2013-14, while last season Ithaca enjoyed a record-setting 21-3 season as well as both conference and district championships.

The stage was set for another fantastic Ithaca season as it returned All-State 6-foot-3 sophomore center Kayla Belles and a cast of seniors who have been instrumental to the rejuvenation of the program.

On Tuesday, they delivered in grand fashion.

“I think this is amazing,” Belles said. “As a sophomore, to experience this is great. And for our seniors to have a really good last year, it’s special. We’re keeping them in mind because we want them to go out with a bang.”

Belles, as usual, controlled the action in the paint as Flint Hamady had no answers for her.

By the game’s end, Belles had racked up a game-high 24 points to go with 21 rebounds in shouldering much of the offensive load for her squad. She also blocked four shots.

“Our guards like to put it over the top to me sometimes but Hamady was doing a good job of taking it away,” Belles said. “They have a really good defense and it was a battle down there.”

But while the addition of Belles the last two years has proven huge, Ithaca’s seniors provided the blueprint in how to turn around a struggling program and are now being rewarded for their patience.

“It means a ton,” said Liz Bentley, one of five seniors on the roster. “It’s been a dream for us and we’ve taken it one game at a time. “It just means a lot. We’re all seniors and we all came through together as a team. It feels great.”

“There were at least some doubters out there. Ithaca has never been this far, so it’s amazing we’ve been able to get this far. I don’t think anyone doubts us anymore.”

All five Yellowjackets – Brooklyn Dolloff (eight), Alysa Betcher (six), Kylee Chaffin (five), Bentley (two) and Claire Reeves (two) – entered the scoresheet to play key roles in the victory.

Ithaca led 11-8 after one quarter as a late Chaffin 3-pointer provided the difference, while a late surge in the second stanza was capped by a Betcher triple and allowed the Yellowjackets to take a 24-17 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Belles scored four quick points and as a team Ithaca began to pour it on. After a pair of Dolloff free throws, the lead was a commanding 37-19.

But the Hawks (22-2), winners of three state championships in their history, fought back valiantly and cut it to 45-39 midway through the fourth quarter.

Ithaca managed to hit enough of its free throws down the stretch to close it out, while also doing a solid job running down the clock and taking care of the basketball.

Dolloff added seven rebounds and three steals, while Bentley pulled down nine boards.

Krystal Rice paced Flint Hamady with 15 points, while Sasha Penn contributed 13 points along with 12 boards and five steals off the bench. Deajah Cofield scored 11 points before fouling out early in the fourth quarter.

Hawks star guard Jalisha Terry, a St. Bonaventure commit, suffered a lower leg injury in the first quarter and did not return.

“What is special about these girls is that they really get along and share a lot of laughs,” Rayburn said. “They’re very dedicated and hard-working. This is a total team achievement.”

Rayburn took over as interim coach in January when the legendary Bob Anderson, one of the state’s all-time winningest coaches, retired because of health concerns.

The adjustment period was brief and Ithaca continued rolling along, going a perfect 14-0 in the Tri-Valley Conference West before dominating districts and regionals.

“We definitely miss Anderson but it didn’t take us long to transition,” Bentley explained. “Coach Rayburn is an amazing coach. She knows how to bring our team together and get a win every time.”

Now that the quarterfinal round was also a success, the Yellowjackets can taste the satisfaction of taking their program to brand-new heights.

“These girls do whatever they’re asked and play as hard as they can every single game. They deserve all the credit,” Rayburn added.
