Alma Schools Athletic Hall of Fame announces Class of 2014

Three new members to be enshrined in October

The Alma Schools Athletic Hall of Fame announced its newest class of inductees Sunday during the annual Alma High School all-class reunion at Wright Park.

The Class of 2014 includes three new inductees in Mike Roth, Anneliese Fox and Doug Yarnell.

This trio will be honored at the Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Ceremony at Pine River Country Club on Oct. 18.

Tickets for the eighth annual induction ceremony are available at the Alma High School Athletic Department, at J & J Giles Tire Service or through the Alma Schools Athletic Hall of Fame at 989-463-8584.

Alma Athletics Hall of Fame President Mike Miller made the announcement Sunday afternoon during the festivities at Wright Park.

Roth and Fox both will enter the Hall of Fame as athletes while Yarnell, a staple with the Alma athletic community for decades, will be enshrined as an ambassador.

Mike Roth – Class of 1987

Roth capped his phenomenal prep career by being named the first-ever ‘Mr. Golf’ in the fall of 1986 by the Michigan Interscholastic High School Golf Coaches Association.

Roth won Class B individual state golf title and became the first player in Alma program history to do so as he carded a 73 at Grand Rapids-Saskatoon Golf Course on Oct. 18, 1986. He edged Pickney’s Robert Kennedy by a stroke.

Additionally the Panthers finished fourth overall in the Class B team standings as they carded a 328, some three strokes behind team state champion Jackson-Lumen Christi.

Roth, a four-time team MVP and three-time captain, earned first-team all-conference honors three times and was a Class B All-State honorable mention golfer as both a sophomore and junior.

He also set nine-hole and 18-hole school records before playing collegiately at the University of Michigan.

“He complemented his physical gifts with hard work to continually improve his game over four years at Alma High School,” said Miller of Roth. “As a senior, he literally rewrote our school record books, and he became a dominant golfer in the State of Michigan.”

Anneliese Fox – Class of 2002

Fox closed her prep career as arguably the best tennis player in school history.

As a four-year varsity player, who earned first-team All-Conference honors four times, Fox compiled a record of 102-19 and won 13 tournament titles.

Moreover the Panthers won four straight conference titles during her tenure and went 40-0 in conference dual meets.

As a freshman Fox went 1-1 at the Division 3 team state finals at No. 2 singles. The Panthers finished seventh overall in the team standings that year.

From her sophomore season forward Fox played solely at No. 1 singles and led the Panthers to the state finals each season where they finished 15th in Division 3 in 1999, 10th in Division 3 in 2000 and 12th in Division 4 in 2001. Fox advanced to the Division 4 quarterfinals as a senior where she lost in three sets.

After high school she played collegiately at Hope College where she was a four-time No. 1 singles flight champion and three-time MIAA MVP.

She also earned All-MIAA honors four times and was a two-time team captain. Fox also excelled academically as she made the MIAA Honor Roll for Athletes and was an Alvin Vanderbush Student Athlete Award winner.

“It’s been said that she combined power from the baseline, wicked topspin, and fierce determination,” said Miller of the three-time All-State performer. “Anneliese was credited with having tremendous drive, but was also considered to be caring, unselfish and extremely coachable.”

Doug Yarnell – Class of 1963

Darnell’s bio puts it perfectly in that it states “A Panther at Heart; A Panther for Life.”

During his high school tenure Yarnell was a four-sport athlete who earned 10 varsity letters.

Yet his contributions to Alma High School athletics go way beyond what he did achieved on the field because Yarnell has been a figurehead for Alma athletics dating back decades.

The former baseball and softball coach is also a Charter Board Member for the Alma Sports Boosters and the Alma Schools Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was also the ‘Voice of the Alma Panthers’ for 25 years as he did radio play-by-play.

Yarnell, who also served in Vietnam with the Marines after high school, received the City of Alma Order of the Tartan Award in 2006 and is still very active within the community and Alma High School athletics.

“Doug is the epitome of an Athletic Ambassador,” said Miller of Yarnell. “He has represented our school with distinction as an athlete, as a coach and as a broadcaster. He has been a leader, an organizer and a promoter of our athletic programs. He is also one of the most well-known and well-liked people in our town.”
