The Central Michigan Stars defeated the West Michigan Riptide 15-8 Saturday afternoon to advance to the championship game of its home tournament at Theunissen Stadium.

Central Michigan (4-2) is now 3-0 in the tournament and will play Sunday at 11 a.m. in the title game.

After falling behind 6-2 following a six-run bottom of the second inning by the Riptide, the Stars responded with two runs in the third and a seven-spot the following frame to take full control of the contest.

In the big fourth inning, a two-run single by Robert Backus (Mt. Pleasant) tied the game at 6-6 and he later scored on an RBI single courtesy of Ryan Cline (Shepherd).

Dean Marais continued the big inning with a double and due to some shoddy defense by the Riptide another five runs eventually crossed in the inning.

Central Michigan starting pitcher Hunter DeBeau (Merrill) settled down after the rough second inning and worked into the fourth inning to earn the victory.

The final four Stars runs were tacked on in the fifth inning before the game ended after that frame due to tournament time limit rules.
