EAST LANSING >> Brad Antcliff put it entirely on himself as coaches tend to do in situations involving teenage heartbreak.

The eighth-year Beal City coach, who led the Aggies to the Division 4 state championships in 2009 and ’10, watched Saturday as his current squad fell short in the quest for a 2014 crown with a 5-0 shutout loss to New Lothrop.

While the current group of Beal City seniors has played in the last two baseball state finals as well as the last two football state finals, winning a state championship has unfortunately not been in the cards with Saturday being their final shot.

“I feel bad for our seniors. I didn’t get them a state championship,” said Antcliff, who is also the defensive coordinator for the Aggies football team. “I have to do what I can to get them a state championship and I feel so bad that I came up short for them. Getting to four state title games is a great accomplishment but these kids deserved a state title and it wasn’t in the cards today.”

Beal City finishes its season with a 36-4 record, while New Lothrop ends at 34-6. It is the first baseball state championship in school history for the Hornets, who played in the semifinal round a year ago.

Kurt Gross started and went the first two innings for the Aggies, giving up one earned run on two hits over two innings.

Gross hit the first batter he faced in the third and the Beal City plan all along came to fruition as senior ace Ty Rollin took the mound the rest of the way.

Rollin, who had thrown four innings the previous day against Kalamazoo Christian in addition to six innings Tuesday in the quarterfinal round, did not have his typical stuff but still did enough to keep the Aggies within reach.

“Ty wanted the ball, no doubt about it,” Antcliff said. “What can I say about him? The kid has a rubber arm. He didn’t have his best stuff today but he threw well enough for us to win. We have to score so it doesn’t really matter how well he threw.”

The only time New Lothrop really touched up Rollin was in the fourth inning when it produced three runs that proved to be plenty of insurance.

One of the runs in the frame was scored in controversial fashion as Ben Muron made contact with New Lothrop coach Keith Villano after he rounded third base.

“The umpire told me it was not interference. It’s a judgment call,” Antcliff said. “Whether it was the right call or not, that’s certainly not what cost us the game.”

The Hornets would add another two runs in the frame on an RBI single from Steven Garza and a run-scoring double from Quentin Taylor to up its advantage to 4-0.

New Lothrop’s final run would cross in the top of the seventh on a Jake VanCleve RBI single.

As for the Beal City bats, all game long it proved to be one missed opportunity after another.

The Aggies had a chance to even the score in the bottom of the second following a leadoff double, but after two outs recorded pinch runner Jake Matthews was caught stealing at third base for the final out of the frame.

In the following inning, Luke Farrell led off with another double for Beal City. But Farrell was thrown out at third on a sacrifice bunt attempt and with two outs, pinch runner Caleb Winegardner was cut down at home by Muron in center field off a single by Nick Hoogerhyde.

Two runners were left on base in the fourth and sixth innings, while one runner was left on in each the fifth and seventh.

Rollin allowed four earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks in five innings of relief. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate including a triple with two outs in the seventh inning. Hoogerhyde, Bleise, Ryan Tilmann, Tucker Gross and Farrwell added one hits apiece. Tilmann and Chase Rollin both drew a walk as well.

Despite the difficult defeat, there is no one that can take away the obvious incredible feat of this Beal City class of seniors doing what has rarely been done in going to two straight state title games in both football and baseball.

“I’m proud of my team. Back-to-back state finals appearances is a special accomplishment,” Antcliff added. “Wish we could have gotten a state title today, but we didn’t. That’s life.”
