Vestaburg's PageThe spring season has been one for the record books for the Vestaburg baseball and softball programs. By winning its fourth consecutive Mid-State Activities Conference championship on Friday, the Vestaburg softball joined the baseball team as conference champions. The baseball program won its first conference championship in 38 years on Tuesday with a sweep of Coleman. It marks the first time in the history of the school that both programs have won a conference title in the same season. Panthers claim TVC Central championship The Alma boys golf team won its fourth Tri-Valley Conference Central championship in five years on Friday with a win at Twin Oaks Golf Course. The Panthers finished the spring with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play and have won 15 consecutive TVC Central jamborees. “I’m real proud of our guys and with their effort and performance,” said Alma coach JT Cleveland. “It shows that when you combine talent with hard work good things happen.” Jay Green and Cody Yates earned first-team All-TVC Central honors, while Luke Mallory earned second team honors and Chance Allen honorable mention. Area track teams secure regional crowns Several area track programs captured regional championships on Friday. For the second consecutive year, the Shepherd girls program won a Division 3 regional title, edging St. Louis. It was the third regional title in four years for the Bluejays. The St. Louis boys also won a Division 3 regional championship at Shepherd on Friday, marking the first time since 2006 that the Sharks had accomplished that feat. The Chippewa Hills girls also won a third straight regional title in dominating fashion, while the Clare girls program won its first Division 3 regional championship since 2006. Golf districts on tap this week Local golf teams will be competing in districts this week. Clare, Farwell, Breckenridge and Sacred Heart will be in action Wednesday, while Montabella, Fulton, Alma, St. Louis, Shepherd and Chippewa Hills will all be competing Thursday. Mt. Pleasant and Ithaca close out the week on Friday. The top three teams in each district advance to regionals. Conference titles within reach Several area baseball and softball teams can lock up conference championships next week. The Chippewa Hills softball team may have the toughest challenge of all the teams competing for a conference championship. After splitting with Hesperia on Friday, the Warriors need a sweep of Holton on Tuesday to win their second consecutive Central State Activities Association title. Holton is currently the No. 1-ranked team in Division 4 and also split with Hesperia earlier in the season. With a sweep of Saginaw Swan Valley on Tuesday, Shepherd will claim a Tri-Valley Conference Central championship. The Bluejays split a doubleheader with Midland Bullock Creek earlier this week, which already swept an always-tough Swan Valley squad. Both Beal City programs can also lock up at least a share of Highland Conference titles on Tuesday with wins over McBain.
