The Shepherd High School girls track team captured its second consecutive Division 3 regional championship Friday.

The Bluejays, who have also won three of the last four regionals they’ve competed in, won Friday with 138 points, while St. Louis finished second with 121 points. Both teams qualified for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association state team meet next Saturday at Kent City. The top-two finishers in each event Friday and those that met qualifying standards also qualified for the MHSAA Division 3 state finals on May 31.

“We had a really great day,” said Shepherd head coach Carey Hammel. “We had a total team effort from the pole vault to the long jump to the sprints and relays, everyone contributed. Our senior class has won the regional three of their four years, so I think the girls were really pleased today.”

Shepherd captured three of the four relays, including the 800 (1:51.67) behind the team of Hannah Yesmunt, Ashtyn Snyder, Rachel Mathers and Mariah Macgregor. The team of Katie Powell, Katelyn Hutchinson, Taylor Thrush and Mathers won the 1.600 (4:17.23), while the group of Katie Powell, Hutchinson, Mathers and Thrush won the 3,200 (9:53.90). Katelyn Hutchinson also won the 1,600 (5:18.55), while Sarah Bellinger captured the pole vault (8-09).
