One year ago Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart’s boys cross country team finished runner-up in the Class D State meet.

This year the Irish were looking to flip the script and that’s exactly what happened Saturday at Maple Creek Golf Club in Shepherd as they won their second Class D State title in three years, out-distancing defending champion Fowler by 97 points.

SHA, which also won the meet in 2011, finished with 51 points on the day and had all five of its scoring runners earn Class D All-State honors via top-30 finishes.

“We had a chip on our shoulder,” said SHA coach Chad Zitzelberger. “After being so disappointed last year we wanted to win this really bad and win it by as many points as possible.”

One year ago Fowler snuck past SHA by eight points as the Eagles posted 54 points to SHA’s 62.

On Saturday the Irish left no doubt as defending Class D state champion Cooper Terry repeated, finishing first overall with a time of 16:29.4

Jim English was runner-up for SHA with a time of 16:43.4.

Logan Moyle (16:55.9) was sixth with Tony Perez (18:03.1) 24th and Sam Neyer (18:08.7) 27th.

The title leads into the most important part of the season for the Irish with regionals and the state finals looming.

“This positions us perfectly for the next two weeks,” Zitzelsberger added.

On the girls side the Irish landed third with 11 points.

Bellaire was first with 99 while Capital Homeschool was second with 101.

Alexis McConnell (19:56.2) earned Class D All-State honors as she led the Irish in sixth.

Megan English (21:49.2) was 33rd with Linde Bolle (21:50.4) 35th, Lizzy Ervin (22:00.7) 38th and Skylar Nelson (22:31.9) 51st.
