SAGINAW - The Mt. Pleasant High School volleyball team fell the championship match of the Saginaw Heritage Invite Saturday.

The Oilers (22-9-4) won their pool after splits with Petoskey (24-26, 26-15) and Hemlock (25-14, 24-26) and a win over Saginaw Valley Lutheran (25-15, 25-12).

In the quarterfinals, Mt. Pleasant topped Saginaw Heritage (25-9, 25-11) to advance to the semifinals, where it defeated Bay City Western (21-25, 25-21, 15-12).

In the championship match, Bloomfield Hills Marion defeated Mt. Pleasant (25-14, 25-18).

Kasey McGillvary led the Oilers with 42 kills, 11 aces and 14 digs, while Brianna Zimmer had 37 kills, five assists and 10 digs.

Megan Kramer established the offense with 122 assists, while Mikala Williams led Mt. Pleasant defensively with 42 digs.

Huskies compete at Northwood Invitational

MIDLAND - Breckenridge went 1-2-1 at the Northwood University Invite Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies defeated Lansing Christian (25-19, 25-23) and split with Grayling (22-25, 25-23), while losing to Ubly (17-25, 23-25) and Bad Axe (22-25, 12-25).

Gabby Foor led Breckenridge with 25 kills, 23 digs and five aces, while Holly Gregory had 11 kills, 14 digs and five aces.

Amber Brown registered 39 assists and 16 digs, while Madison Gagne chipped in 21 assists and 11 digs.


Oilers win in final 5 seconds

BIG RAPIDS - The Mt. Pleasant High School soccer team eked out a 2-1 win Saturday at Big Rapids in the closing seconds to improve to 8-7-3 on the season.

Andrew Brookens scored unassisted with five seconds left in regulation to lift the Oilers to the win.

He scored both goals, the first coming on a penalty kick, for Mt. Pleasant.

Zac Brown also had six saves in goal.


Hornets run at Pine River

LEROY - The Harrison High School cross country teams competed in the Pine River Invite Saturday with the boys landing sixth out of 14 teams and the girls 10th.

Daltom MacDormott (18:35) led the boys in seventh with Reed Romanowski (20:31) 36th, Lukas Oesterreich (21:00) 42nd, Phillip Hale (21:01) 43rd and Noah Cesal (21:10) 45th.

Raylene Ramirez (24:05) led the girls in 32nd with Stephanie Prince (26:16) 47th, Brandi Miller (29:52) 64th, Christine Mason (31:10) 68th and Iris Xie (31:11) 69th.
