Three mid-Michigan track and field stars will be competing in the 2017 New Balance National Outdoors meet in Greensboro, N.C., this weekend.

Ithaca sophomore throwers Alex VanDeWeghe and Baylee Chaffin will both compete in the shot put while Clare senior Kasey Staley will compete in the pole vault.

This three-day event opens on Friday and runs through Sunday.

VanDeWeghe and Chaffin will both throw at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning in the ‘Emerging Elite’ division while Staley will start vaulting at 4 p.m. Saturday in the ‘Championship Division.’

VanDeWeghe finished third in the Division 3 state finals this year with a throw of 56-0.25. Chaffin was fifth with a throw of 52-6.25. Both earned All-State honors for the Jackets.

Staley is a four-time All-Stater in the pole vault as she was runner-up as a freshman and sophomore before winning D3 state championships in the event in each of the last two years. She will compete at CMU starting this fall.
