Grosse Pointe North swept the Anchor Bay volleyball quad, Wedneday, losing just one game on the day.

Anchor Bay (8-3 overall) won the opening game against GPN, 25-16, but lost the next two by identical 25-20 scores. The Tars won their other two matches, topping Fraser (25-15, 25-12) and Sterling Heights (26-28, 26-24, 15-9).

"We played better than we have all season in long stretches,” Tars coach Derek Arena said. “We also had a few bad stretches that cost us a few sets. We are continuing to work to get better."

Maria Mallon had 37 kills and 16 points for Anchor Bay. Hannah Gates added 20 kills and 19 points. Danielle VanThomme contributed 16 points and 47 assists.

Fraser picked up a win over Sterling Heights (18-25, 25-21, 25-23). The Ramblers also gave Grosse Pointe North a scare in the second game of their match. They jumped out to an early 5-0 before the Norseman rallied to win in successive games. 25-19, 25-14. Amanda Vanjaarsveld had nine kills and Harlee Budnick added in eight in the loss.

“We’re coming off a rough weekend, so they really picked up,” Fraser coach Kristi Skladanowski said. “We have a young team. (We had) better communication and better flow on the court overall.”

Sterling Heights (6-9-1) coach Eric Wacterhauser was pleased that his team put up a fight to the end with Anchor Bay.

“They’re bigger than we are and they are stronger than we are and we did not back down,” he said.

The Stallions’ senior outside hitter Maddie Czopek finished the meet with 38 kills and 46 digs.
