Tars finish regular season with shutout

Anchor Bay starts postseason today

Fitting for the kind of season they have had, the Anchor Bay Tars won their finale, blanking Port Huron High 5-0 on Saturday.

The Tars, who improved to 20-5, meet either Oxford or Romeo on Wednesday in a Division 2 pre-regional final at Suburban Ice. Game time is 7:15 p.m. The winner advances to the regional final at noon on Saturday.

Even after a marvelous season, head coach Mel Rettell is not chalking up any easy playoff wins.

“We just finished our best season ever,” Rettell said. “We won our first league title and hit 20 wins. So, getting this team fired up is not even going to be an issue. We have to take care of the small stuff, and focus on all the details. That’s been our motto all year long.”

The Tars beat St. Clair 4-3 in overtime last Thursday, a day after they were beaten 3-0 by Lapeer West.

Against St. Clair, Anchor Bay led 1-0 after one period, but the Saints rallied to lead 2-1 after two periods.

St. Clair scored to go up 3-1 with seven minutes to play in the third period. Shane DiDonato scored for the Tars a minute later to close the game to 3-2.

That’s when Mitch Ettell came to the rescue. Ettell scored with about three minutes to play to tie the game 3-3, which was the score after regulation.

With time running out in overtime, Ettell found the back of the net to lift the Tars to victory just 14 seconds before the end of the extra period.

Ryan Haag added the Tars’ other goal and had an assist. DiDonato had an assist to go with his goal. Matt Kaiser had two assists and Ryan Bell had one helper.

Mitchell Day made 23 saves to get the win for the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division champions.

The setback against Lapeer West was the first time all season the Tars were blanked. Dustin Bramos was in goal for Anchor Bay and made 21 saves.
