Goalkeeper was `outstanding' in Falcons' 3-1 win over Utica

Persistence finally paid off for Ford’s girls soccer team, as the Falcons were able to top Utica, 3-1, after a scoreless first half in Tuesday night’s Division 1 district quarterfinal match.

The Falcons (11-1-4) dominated most of the possession in the first half, but senior Utica keeper Kaley Brenizer stole the show.

“Oh my God, did she play outstanding or what?” said Ford coach Teri Steinwascher. “She was good.”

Utica coach David Moran also had some kind words to say about his goalie after the game.

“Kaley was stellar,” said Moran. “We expected an offensive onslaught and Kaley just turned shot after shot aside.

“Throughout her four years, high balls have kind of been her Achilles’ heel, but she made some great saves on them today,” he continued.

Moran’s team was without key players Madeleine Motloch and Ari Jalics, among others, due to a rash of injuries.

Still, Brenizer and the Chieftains were able to keep Ford off the board until early in the second half, when Cecilia Steinwascher lofted the ball into the air and over the Utica keeper.

Utica pressed on and got the tying marker from Sophia Gielnak (her first varsity goal) following a scramble in front of the net, but Julie Ann Piechocki gave Ford the lead back just four minutes later.

“We talk about how if we get scored on, you come back and pick up your own energy level,” said Steinwascher. “And if we score, we’ve got to go get another right away if you’ve got the other team wondering what they were doing.”

The Falcons did get another one right away, as Darline Radamaker fired a laser from Swinehart Field’s 20-yard line that whistled past Brenizer after the 19-minute mark for some much-needed insurance.

Next up for the Falcons is a district semifinal date with Cousino on Thursday. The game will take place at Troy Athens High School at 8 p.m.
