Big Reds score 12 in the third inning

Needing a win Thursday to keep its MAC White Division title hopes alive, Chippewa Valley got it in the exact same way it has been winning games all season long ... by coming from behind.

After falling behind 8-4 after two innings, the Big Reds erupted for 12 runs a half inning later and rode that momentum to a 21-10 win over L’Anse Creuse North.

"The girls don't give up," CV coach Claire Kapral said. "These girls have come and worked hard every day. We have two-and-a-half-hour practices every day. This is what they wanted. This is something important to them. It's family, school and softball for these kids. That's really showing this year. They deserve all of this."

The win puts CV and LCN in a tie in the MAC White with one game remaining. The Big Reds play at Stevenson, while the Crusaders host Utica.

"It's been a long time since we've been (in contention) for a division title," Kapral said. "People have been concerned about us."

The Big Reds last won a division title in 2007, going undefeated in the MAC Red that season.

"We really wanted this win," said Brook Misch, who threw out LCN's Piper Roth at home from right field trying to score from second in the fifth inning. "It's a huge win. I knew we could do it. It's really great."

The 21 runs are the most the Big Reds, who beat Stevenson earlier this season, have scored all season and the 12 in one inning was also a high mark.

"Both of our pitchers got hammered," LCN coach Mark Mignot said. "You score 10 runs and you ought to win. Give them all the credit in the world."

LCN lost to Utica earlier this season.

"There's no guarantee for either one of us," Mignot said. "I'm just going to tell them to go home, enjoy the weekend and I'll see them Monday. You can't let this effect you. You just have to zero in on the next game. We still have a shot at winning the league or tying for it. Whatever happens I'm really proud of these girls."

The Crusaders last won a league title in 2011, claiming the MAC Blue outright.

CV (7-2, 19-8) was led by Cherie Allard (3-for-5, two RBI, four runs), Ivy Velazquez (3-for-5, four runs), Misch (3-for-4, two doubles, four RBI, three runs), Marisa Vermiglio (2-for-3, three RBI), Gina Liss (2-for-4, two RBI) and Sarah Stevens (three runs).

"We've been hitting one through seven and eight and nine haven't been doing too bad either," Kapral said. "We wanted to get four runs an inning and just keep recording outs when they hit. We knew L'Anse Creuse North could pound the ball so we were just trying to win every inning."

Emily Bliss (two hits, four RBI) hit a three-run homer in the second inning for LCN. Roth was 3-for-4 with a triple, double and scored two runs. Claire Kerpet (two runs) drove in two on two hits.
