Falcons down Eisenhower, 5-1, in a MAC Red game

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away …

All right, so maybe it hasn’t been a millennium or two since Ford beat Eisenhower in girls soccer, but it has been quite some time.

None of the seniors on the Falcons’ roster had ever gotten a win against their MAC Red opponent.

Not until Wednesday on Swinehart Field, when coach Teri Steinwascher’s Ford squad dominated Ike, 5-1.

Sophomore Nicol Fiantaco and junior Julie Ann Piechocki scored two goals each. Teammate Jenna Vasquez, a freshman, got the Falcons’ fifth goal.

Eisenhower got on the scoreboard with just a couple of minutes left in the game. Jillian Winarski, a senior, got that goal.

“This feels great,” said Piechocki. “We’ve worked real hard. It was one of our goals this season. We’ve been coming together as a team and playing with a lot of heart. I think that is what pulled us through this time.

“If we keep playing like this we’ll peak during districts. We played really well, and Eisenhower is a great team. It could have gone either way,” continued Piechocki.

Piechocki scored both of her goals in the second half. Fiantaco staked her team to a 2-0 lead at halftime.

“I think after the first goal all of us started bonding together to get the second goal and the third goal and so on,” said Fiantaco. “It just made us come together stronger after the first goal.”

Both girls play for the Nationals travel soccer club. They play on different Nationals teams. On those squads are also kids from Eisenhower.

“I play travel with a lot of those girls. They are very good people and they are very good soccer players,” said Piechocki. “It is fun to play against people you are close to.”

The Falcons have two more regular-season games. They welcome Troy Monday, and take on Grosse Pointe South to close the MAC Red season Wednesday.

“That was a good win, wasn’t it? Early on in the season, we started pretty strong. We played Athens and DeWitt and we scored eight goals. We beat them both 4-0. I thought `Oh my gosh, we’ll win the state championship if we play like this.’ Then spring break came, and when we came out of it, we hit a lull,” said Steinwascher.

Lulls are relative. Her Falcons are 4-1-2 in the MAC Red, 8-1-4 overall. Eisenhower is 5-1-0, 13-2-0.

When the teams met earlier this season, Ike won 1-0.

“We are starting to peak at the right time,” said the Ford coach. “We have next week and then we go into the tournament.”

Her team faces Utica on Monday, May 29, in the district opener.

Eisenhower takes on Anchor Bay and Stevenson in a pair of MAC Red games next week.

“We always get their best game,” said Bella Jodzis, a senior midfielder and captain of the Eisenhower team. “They had a plan coming into the game and they followed it.”

Mehrdad Nekoogar is the Eisenhower coach.

“We had a talk before the game and we talked about motivation,” said Nekoogar. “How badly do you want to win the game? To be honest, there was no fire at all for us. The reason is my players know they have almost wrapped up the championship. What do you play for? Ford had a lot of motivation going into the game.”
