The mortarboard from the University of Missouri came first.

Three days later, Howard Lewis was being fitted for a helmet.

“I graduated from college on June 6 and received my draft notice on June 9. I served two years in the army. Most of that time was spent at Selfridge Air Force Base as a battery clerk,” said Lewis. “Out of 54 in our graduating class at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, 48 were sent to Korea. I was fortunate to be sent to Michigan.

“I was discharged July 11, 1958, and applied for a teaching position at L’Anse Creuse Public Schools. I was hired in 1958 and the rest is history.”

Lewis began his career in education at Green Elementary School. Following was a move to both L’Anse Creuse High School and L’Anse Creuse Central Middle School. He taught history, government and physical education, and he also coached.

He later taught physical education and coached at L’Anse Creuse North Middle School, and became the athletic director there.

Lewis closed out his impressive career as an assistant principal/athletic director at L’Anse Creuse High School, where part of the athletic complex is named in his honor.

“I coached ninth-grade football, varsity cross country and track for 21 years in four leagues (Tri County, Bi-County, Eastern Michigan and Macomb Area),” said Lewis.

“I have truly been blessed with all the great coaches, athletic directors and administrators I have had the privilege to work with in the county and state. Also I appreciate the support my family has given me,” he continued.

Howard Lewis and his wife, Shirley, had three children; Lori Molloy, Chris Lewis and Sharon Pyper. They have 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Among his many professional and civic activities are: church elder at Bethany Christian Church; member of Michigan Association Secondary School Principals; member of National Association Secondary School Principals; member of National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association; member of National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association; member of Macomb County Assistant Principals Association; and a member of Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
