It looks like another winning model has rolled off the Ford assembly line.

Coach Matt Joseph’s experienced softball team opened the 2017 season with an 18-0 three-inning win against Utica in a MAC crossover game Tuesday afternoon.

“We return 11 from last year’s team,” said Joseph. “We have a lot of experience. It is a fun team. These girls have played in a lot of big games. They have a lot of confidence. This is a team with great chemistry.”

Winning pitcher Emily Karas threw all three innings. She struck out four and gave up three hits.

The Falcons rapped 14 hits.

Leading the way was junior second baseman Gabby Palazzolo who went 4 for 4 including a double. She scored four runs and knocked in three. Senior first baseman Nikki Sorgi had three hits, scored three times and had four RBI. Jackie Nicholson, a junior outfielder had two hits and scored three times. Gabby Dobroczinski had a double and knocked in three runs.

Ford finished 25-8 last season. The Falcons finished second in the MAC Red behind Dakota. They also lost to Dakota in a district championship game.

Karas and Sorgi will alternate in the pitching circle for the Falcons.

“One of our biggest strengths is how we hit the ball. Everybody really attacks the ball,” said Joseph.

For Utica, Rachel Miller had two hits including a triple. Maria McCollom had a single.

His team travels to Rochester Adams Wednesday. On Saturday, they compete in the Clarkston tournament.
