The Cousino young guns came out firing to start the 2017 high school baseball season Tuesday.

Coach Justin Newcomb’s Cousino Patriots took down Center Line, 10-2, in a MAC crossover contest.

“We are young,” said Newcomb. “We have five sophomores up on varsity. Still, we have very strong leadership from within. It is important that the young guys continue to develop.”

Senior Andrew Burke is one of those captains. A right-hander, he got the win against Center Line, going three innings, allowing just two hits and fanning five.

Sophomore Matt Wimbury ripped a two-run double in the sixth inning. He is another team captain.

Senior centerfielder Max Schulte’s three hits included two doubles and a two-run homer in the fourth inning. He also swiped a base.

Senior Anthony Secchi, who plays right field, had two hits. One of those was a three-run homer in the third inning. The Patriots racked up four runs in the third.

Sophomore Jason Del Papa doubled off the fence in left for his first varsity hit.

Senior Michael Rice is the other Cousino captain.

For Center Line, senior Brendan Baber was the starting pitcher. He struck out five in three innings of work. He also had a hit.

Cousino welcomes Utica Thursday.
