Huskies will play Red champ Cousino at Dakota

PORT HURON >> It took more than three quarters, but Port Huron Northern finally got away from Ford in a MAC Red-White Tournament semifinal.

The host Huskies used sizable runs to open each of the four quarters to move past the Falcons, 67-51, Tuesday night.

“We jumped out early and we couldn’t ever really get away from them until the end,” PHN coach Mark Dickinson said. “They responded every time.

“They’ve got a great team and they’re used to winning. We just kept fighting and trying to get stops and, offensively, finish inside.”

With the win, the Huskies (17-2) will now meet Cousino, which won the MAC Red, in the tournament final on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Dakota.

The Huskies are 0-2 against the Patriots this season.

The loss snaps Ford’s 16-game winning streak; the Falcons fall to 16-2; 10-0 MAC White).

PHN’s Bree Bauer (nine boards) and Sami Klink each finished with 16 points, while Kendyl Keyes added 12 and Jenna Koppinger followed with 10 and eight rebounds. Kathleen O’Connor added four assists.

“I thought our starting five did a nice job sharing the ball,” Dickinson said. “They definitely fed off each other. They don’t worry about who scores, they worry about winning — that’s what we want.”

Though the Huskies dominated the early stages of every quarter, the outcome was in jeopardy until midway through the third quarter. A 10-3 run to open the third quarter helped push the PHN lead to 49-39 — the first double-digit lead for either team — with 1:21 left in the third quarter.

“You’re trying to play catch-up; that’s tough to do,” Ford coach Matthew Joseph said. “We missed some shots and they knocked some down.

“When the lead goes from four or five to 10, it gets tough. Then you start to press a little bit. I think we did that instead of staying within ourselves and being a little more patient.”

Ashley Alsheskie scored a team-high 15 points for the Falcons in the loss. Julia Cianferra finished with 10 points and Isabel Holtan added eight.

Port Huron Northern scored the game’s first seven points and opened the game on 10-2 run. Ford responded with a 13-5 run of its own to tie the game at 15 with 1:07 left in the opening quarter.

The Falcons took their first lead on the first possession of the second quarter— and only lead of the first half, just to have Keyes put the Huskies back out front with a put back on the ensuing trip down the floor.

Northern opened the second quarter the same way it started the first — on a 10-2 run — and again had to weather another Ford rally. The Falcons scored the final four points of the half to cut the halftime deficit to 29-26.

Ford briefly reclaimed the lead early in the third quarter on a pair of Nikki Sorgi free throws with 6:10 remaining, only to have PHN counter with a 20-9 surge to all but put the game away.

“They have a lot of weapons, and we knew that coming in,” Joseph said. “It’s tough to take things away, because when you take one thing away, they hurt you with others.”

After her 16-point performance, Klink didn’t shy away from questions regarding a third matchup with Cousino.

“We wanted another shot at them,” she said. “It’s a rivalry and they won two this year…but we won two last year.”
